September 24. 26—Napier Park R.C, September 24. 26—Avondale J.C. &ep tember 29, 30—Geraldine R.O NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "Kestrel”) The Napier Park meeting on Saturday, the acceptances for which appear this morning, should be an interesting one.’ Wanganui’s representatives will be few in number. Crown Coin and Break o’ Day. Wallace Young left late last night with Crown Coin and Break o’ Day, who claim engagements at both Napier Park and Hastings. The former will be ridden by R. E. Thomson in Saturday’s Steeplechase. Wheruanm’s Work. Whenuanui is being led about the roaris by Mr Gardner and looks ready to be taken in hand at an early date for the spring campaign. It was intended to give the Acre —Bell Boyne gelding a nomination for the Jackson Stakes. Danae for the Stud. Danae, states a Taranaki writer, was left at Ellerslie by E. Brough, and the four-year-old daughter of Catmint and. Marabout will be retired to the matrons' paddock. A Collarbone Broken. Through a yearling shying and throwing M. Conway heavily on the road at Hawera on Saturday, the Taranaki trainer sustained a broken collarbone and will be off the scene at what promises to be a busy time. Coldg in Hawera Stable. Severe colds have visiter! the occupants of O. Cox’s Hawera stables and Helen was stated to be in a bad way for some time. However, the Limoitd —Bonny Portland filly is now on the improve, but the set-back may mean that she will be late in coming to hand nexx season. Enare for Trentham.. Those who followed the Sunny Lake —Stepka gelding Enare in his three starts over hurdles at the Ellerslie Great Northern fixture will be anxious to be on the ex-Southerncr in his next starts. Enare is to race at Trentham next month. Mason’s Sydney Trip. According to southern reports, R. J. Mason leaves for Sydney in July. Agrion and Phillipic are to be two certain travellers, and the AbsurdCherry Mart rising two-year-old. A Good Fee. A recent issue of the Lexington Gazette tells that Earl Sande, the crack jockey of America, is to receive a retaining fee for this season of over £4OOO, which will not include regular riding fees and bonuses. Back to the Bay. Fireblight and Bennanee returned to Hawke’s Bay on Friday. Fireblight only started once at Ellerslie and that was in the Great Northern Steeplechase. She did not handle the going nt all well awl was not started on the third day. Fireblight’s next outing may be in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase. Brother to Rafa. A three-year-old brother to Rafa, by Potoa—Chime arrived back at Auckland by the Maunganui on her last trip from Sydney. He has been purchased by the Auckland sportsman, Mr V. Casey, who has turned the gelding out for a short period-. Commendation Winters Well. Commendation is going on the right way at Greenmeadows, and George Jones has him looking in good trim for this time of the year, states a Napier writer. He is booked to leave for Sydney in August, and he will have plenty of support from this quarter when he starts. All will wish so fine a sportsman as Mr W. H. Gaisford the best oi luck on his trip. If nothing goes wrong with Commendation in the meantime lie can de depended upou to uphold the prestige of New Zealand against any of the cracks that can be brought against him in the weight-for-age contest.

Eulalie for Sale. According io the Sydney Eeferee the New Zealand filly Eulalie is in the market for sale at SUUU guineas. At two years old Eulalie won three good races and her slake earnings to date under Mr G. D. Greenwood-’s colours amount to £3200. The filly is well engaged at three years old, and she figures in the Australian Jockey Club’s 1/erby and the Victorian Racing Club s Oaks. Mr Greenwood has sold some of his horses exceedingly well in Australia. If he gets 5000 guineas lor Eulalie he will be able to afford a smile. Too Fast a Race. The tactics employed by the jockeys in the hack hurdle race on the second day at Ellerslie were extraordinary, states * 4 Vedette.” Nearly all the field were great jumpers, yet the pace set in the early stages was rather that of a sprint event on the flat. The inevitable result was three falls and much interference. With seasoned and experienced junipers a fast pace can be expected, but such tactics employed on hacks making first and second attempts is almost suicidal. The only remarkable thing was that more of the runners did- not come to grief*

Ten-shilling “Tote” at Ellerslie. When the Auckland Racing Club, in deference to decided requests for ten shilling windows in the paddock enclosure, installed two windows in the stewards ’ stand- lobby at Ellerslie, it could not have foreseen the inconvenience it would cause, “Vedette” writes. For ten minutes prior to each race this section of the stand is jammed to suffocation, and those people whose business requires them to pass the point experience the greatest trouble and tedious delay. These two windows provide practically the sole medium for half-sovereign investors in the inside enclosure, for the club has refused to make any provision at the main totalisator house. Those who have the right of entry to the stewards’ stand are thus well burdened with commissions from numerous friends. The congestion can well be left to the imagination. Dividends in New South Wales. A consensus of opinion of the new totalisator regulations in New South Wales is quite unfavourable to the innovation. It is said- that the machine is now virtually blind, for outsiders’ dividends are cut down to» keep the favourites from, being too short in price. The proof at a recent meeting was shown that supporting five horses on the totalisator at an outlay of £2 10s, the profit was 17s Gd. The same £2 10s expended in one of the town S.P. offices on the same horses would have shown a profit of £2 2s. From this it looks as if the Government will lose instead- of gain revenue by forcing money into the coffers of the bookmakers.

A Sydney cablegram states that there is much complaint in the {•porting world over Saturday’s Randwick incident, in which the horse Castles was scratched at the eleventh hour. It now appears that Castles, besides being wrongly described, was not registered, his registration having lapsed, though he recently started in several races on country and suburban courses.
