FROM THE NORTH

SPEEDING MOTORIST MAN WITH POLICE RECORD From the North many things come; some that are good, and some that are not. A defendant at theWanganui Magistrate’s Court yesterday was stated to be a not altogether desirable visitor to the city. Frederick Lind was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car in Victoria Avenue on June 11. Evidence was given by Constable Nairn to the effect that, on Saturday, he was standing at the intersection of Ingestre Street and the Avenue. He noticed a car coming at a rapid rate and swaying, so he concluded that the driver had either lost control of the vehicle was drunk. At Guyton Street, accused turned round and witness later stopped him. It was obvious that accused was under the influence of liquor, but he said he had not had more than four or five drinks. Constable McAlpine said he saw Lind at the station and he was under the influence of liquor. Senior-Sergeant nopdoll asked that the matter of sentence be allowed to stand down until further enquiries were made. Lind, in January, 1925, had been admitted to probation for the unlawful use. of a car. Since that time, he had been charged in Auckland- with assault and broach of probation, and in December, 1926, was sent to gaol for breach of probation and unlawfully using a car. ! ** WHIIQHB Superintendent Ching said that in regard to a further charge of broach of probation, there was a sum for maintenance owing by Lind at Auckland. Sentence was deferred on the first charge, and the hearing of the second was remanded until to-morrow. | Lind pleaded guilty when charged (with speeding in Victoria Avenue. I Chief City Traffic Inspector G. Fear declared that defendant’s car nnd aniother car passed the Post Office and ; Guyton Street at a rate of from 30 to -85 miles an hour. The incident had been witnessed by several people and I seemed like a case of racing up the | Avenue. I Accused was convicted and- ordered jto come up for sentence to-morrow.
