WANGANUI PROFESSIONALS SATURDAY’S ROAD RACE The 18-mile road race on Saturday, under the auspices of the Wanganui Cycling Club resulted in a win for A. Taylor by a few inches from E. Barker, with A. Snow third and A, Barnes fourth. The winner took 48min. lOscc. to do the journey, the second man 48min. 10 l-ssec., and the third man 48min. 10 3-ssee. R. Davis secured fastest time honours, doing the journey in 45min. Isec., which is a record for the course, beating White’s previous best by one minute. L. Smith secured second fastest time, 45min. 1 l-ssec. The first time round the 4min. men had caught the limit and the bunch comprised A. Barnes, R. Turner, C. Leonard, A. Taylor, A. Snow and E. Barker, who took 23min. 30sec. to do the first nine miles Turner and Leonard retired from the race at this point. The back division comprised R. Macey, C. McPike, L. Smith, R. White, R. Davis and Snowy Taylor ,the scratch mon taking 22min. for the round, having made up two minutes on the limit men and Imin 30sec. on the 4min. bunch. McPike retired from the bunch at this part. Coming over the rise at the finish, Snow Barker, Barnes and Taylor were sprinting desperately for places, but Taylor and Barker drew away slightly, Taylor just managing to stave off Barker’s challenge. Right on their heels came the back division and a great battle ensued for fastest time honours. Davis, sprinting well, just managed to keep off Smith, White and Snowy Taylor’s challenge. Riders’ Points Positions The following are the positions of the riders for the McCarthy Rose Bowl and Reliable Cup:—A. Taylor and E. Barker 8, L. E. Smith and G. Simon 7, Snowy Taylor, C. McPike and R. Davis 5, A. Snow and R. Macey 4, R. White, J. Slewaxt and C. Watkinson 3, A. Barnes 2. For the All-round Road Championship the points are:—R. Davis and L. E. Smith 5, Snowy Taylor 4, Rod White and C. Watkinson 3.
