GENERAL TRADE

A BUSINESS REVIEW MERCHANTS AND THE MARKETSThe quiet period of trade prevalent throughout New Zealand, is still showing its effects in Wanganui, and business at present is showing only a small amount of activity. Owing to the Wanganui race meeting there has been a Alight brightening i,n the last few days, but this is only temporary. Bookings for the new month commence next week for retailers. A review of liilcs follows: Barcelona Nuts. A rise has taken place on Barcelona nuts, as advised in the last cables received. This market is reported to be very firm and advancing. Cocoa Butter The market for cocoa butter is now showing a tendency for. lower values. A fortnight ago prices in London a*d»vanced 4d per lb., but a few days later prices receded to their previous level. Cables since received have advised a further fall and the revised quotations now show a reduction ot 3s per cwt. Brazil Nuts The market for Brazil nuts, Para No. 1 new season’s, has firmed' still further, the latest cables received announcing another rise, which makes the total advance ten pounds per ton since the first of the new season’s quoted in February. Java Coffee New crop Robusta Java coffee beans are now being offered for shipment from Samarage during June and July at a reduction of £5 per ton on the prices recently quoted on present season’s for prompt shipment. Jordan Almonds The prices now listed, for new season’s Jordan almonds arc about £l5 per ton dearer than the opening rates of last season. Merchants in London are showing no desire to speculate below the quotations named so it would seem that the Jordan almond market is likely to hold round about the present figure. Sicily Almonds During the last fortnight several advances have been made on new season’s Sicily almonds, and it is now reported that one of the largest shippers is not anxious to sell further at the moment. Mildura Sultanas The grading this year is reported to be causing some confusion and dissatisfaction. In some instances Four Crown are judged: to be no better than Two Crown, while a sample of One Crown has been inspected which seems quite equal to Three Crown. No doubt the attention of the Australian Dried Fruit Association will be drawn to these apparent inconsistencies. Californian Canned Goods Fruits are unchanged and steady at firm rates, and imports into New Zealand' will consequently be very limited this year, leaving the market open to Australian canning. Peas and corn were packed last year in excessive quantities and will apparently bo difficult to sell. Spinnach and asparagus packing were in full swing when the mail left San Francisco, and good business had already opened.
