STEAMER IN DISTRESS
TRAGEDY IMMINENT BREAKING UP RAPIDLY. (Sun). SAN FRANCISCO, May 19. The Union Company’s motor ship Hauraki has responded to an S.O.S. land is attempting the rescue of the steamer Indian Harbour, which is wrecked on I’oint Garda, 185 miles from San Francisco. Being heavily laden, the Hauraki is unable to approach close enough to get a line aboard the Indian Harbour, but j is still standing by to pick up any of the crew of 27 if they take to the lifeboats. The water is rising rapidly in I the holds and the seas are pounding her •hard. The gale is increasing. I Captain Anderson, of the Hauraki, I has wirelessed to San Francisco that the Indian Harbour is in a very bad position and rescue is impossible without shore aid. She is breaking up i rapidly, and has sent a message to the Hauraki appealing for quick assistance <>r tragedy is imminent, because the ’seas are too high to allow of launching the lifeboats.
