THIRD PARTY RISK

SUGGESTED LEGISLATION ASHBURTON FARMERS’ DELIBERATIONS. [Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, May 20. The mid-Canterbury conference of the Farmers’ Union to-day carried the following remits:— “That in the interests of the public, legislation should be passed making it compulsory for every motorist to have a third party risk covei against accident, the Government to collect the premium (a flat rate) with regiatrtion fees, and that after paying claims and providing for reserves, the balance should be used to reduce the premium next year.”

Tho conference discussed the following remit: “That the operation of the present Arbitration Court system is unsatisfactory and calls for urgent reform; we therefore suggest (1) that provision be made for third party representation in all cases when so desired before finally making awards; (2) that preference to unionists be abolished; (3) that before calling a strike a compulsory secret ballot of members of the union affected be taken to decide whether the strike shall or shall not be declared.’’ The remit was withdrawn in favour of a similar one already before the Dominion Executive, which was approved. It was also resolved that the Government’s attention should be drawn to the necessity of a compulsory national provident scheme, also that the Government should subsidise certain things that had to be shipped across Cook Straits, or get freights reduced by about 50 per cent.
