RANDOM SHOTS

What might have been called the most unusual strip of roadway in America was recently opened at Astoria, Long Island. One hundred and fifty yards in length and made of cobblestones. Ancient stores and houses lined the walks. A quaint bit of old England bloomed in the new world. Thirty-five carpenters constructed it in two days. All for the sake of injecting realism into D. W. Griffith’s latest Paramount picture, “Sorrows of Satan,” which features Adolphe Menjou, Ricardo Cortez, Carol Dempster and Lya de Putti.

Richard Barthelmess has joined the sheik ranks of Celluloidia in his current production ‘ ‘ The White Black Sheep,” which Sidney Olcott is directing for First National. Dick has a beard which he has been nursing for four weeks, and it is the envy of the extras who participate in the mob scenes laid in Asia Minor. This is the I first time Dick hns prrnpßrod in a role with an Oriental background. S?S * * « Dorothy Gish’s current production “London,” is an original for the screen by Thomas Burke, a romance of LimeLiayxuir, to be released oy Paramount. The photoplay was enacted against authentic London backgrounds and pictures many noted places during the action of its story of the little slum girl who fled into the night to escape evil Ah Kwang, King of Limehouse. It was directed by Herbert Wilcox and photographed by R. Field Ovcrbaugh. Cullen Landis, who. in the past has had some excellent roles to his credit, features as the juvenile lead in “Then Came the Woman,” being released by Universal. Mr. Landis does exceptional work in this picture, and proves that he does possess the ability to act and to portray with convincement, a rather difficult character—that of a good natured fellow with a violent temper. Frank Mayo and Mildred Ryan also appear in the picture. A daring oriental costume is worn by Billie Dove, said to be the screen’s most beautiful woman, in the Univer-sal-Jewel “The Sensational Seekers.” She co-stars with Huntley Gordon in this. Lois Weber directed with a supporting cast comprising Raymond Bloomer. Peggy Montgomery. Edith Yorke, Phillips Smalley, Nora Cecil and Clarence Thompson. % ❖ * ❖

A three months’ location trip to the big woods of northern Oregon was included in the making of the UniversalJewel attraction “The ,Ice Flood.” More than sixty performers were away from the studio for three months in order to photograph the exterior scenes for the picture in their actual settings.

Once again an Australian has been given a chance in the motion picture field, and this time it is Lotus Thompson, who has been engaged by Paramount. Advices are to the effect that this little lady will be seen in “Rough House Rosie,” Clara Bow’s latest starring vehicle for that organisation which is now being filmed. Her countless admirers of her efforts in Australian motion pictures will eagerly look forward to her reappearance on the screen.
