CITY FINANCES

REVIEW TO BE MADE “AN UNGENEROUS STATEMENT.” A statement of the City Council’s accounts was asked for at last evening’s meeting of that body by Councillor W. M. Falconer. The reason for this, he said, was that it had been mooted that the old Council had spent £23,000 of this year’s revenue. Not only was it talked about in the city, but it had been put to the speaker by Councillor J. Siddells and he felt it incumbent upon him to have the matter cleared. “I think such a statement was at least ungenerous,” said Councillor Falconer. “Councillor Siddells could have ascertained the true facts before he made an assertion such as this.” Councillor Siddells said he was sorry Councillor Falconer had brought the matter forward in open meeting as the speaker had intended to go into it with the Finance Comimttee. The votes for the month were all in excess of those for the corresponding month of the previous year, and he, suggested that increases were unwarranted. During the previous year £776 in excess of the year’s estimates had been received. The review will be prepared.
