Unpopular Act

FLAG BILL PASSED Climax to South African Controversy MEETINGS OF PROTEST DEMONSTRATIONS IN CAPE TOWN AND DURBAN. [By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright.] Received May 17, 11 p.m. (A. and N.Z.) CAPE TOWN, May 17. The Assembly passed the Flag Bill *>y a majority of 21 votes. General Smuts vigorously opposed its introduction on the ground that it would re-open all racial bitterness and endanger the Imperial progress already made towards amity. The member for Zululand also strongly appealed to the Government to delay the Bill, with a view to settling the flag question by agreement. A packed meeting at the Town Hall adopted resolutions against the passing of the Bill. There was a remarkable demonstration in front of the Durban Town Hall, at which the Union Jack was unfurled and dedicated in the presence of 10,000 people. The Flag Bill was characterised as a violation of Christian principles. Both gatherings were marked by much enthusiasm.
