WHARF DISTURBANCE

FIREMEN CLEARED A REPORT CORRECTED. By describing as firemen two inebriated seamen from the ship Progress, who caused some excitement at the city wharf recently, it is regretted that a reflection was made on the vessel’s firemen. A ‘ 1 Chronicle” reporter was informed at the time that the men concerned were firemen, but apparntly the information supplied by the informant was not bona fide, as it is now learned that the cause of the disturbance was two seamen. It was a fireman, Mr J. Brown, who jumped into the river to the rescue of one of the seamen.

It is to be hoped that the explanation will clear the firemen of any stigma which may have attached to them as a result of the previous report.
