UNUSUAL LAW CASE

MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE. • For the first tim<» in the annals of criminal law a limited company was indicted on a charge of manslaughter at Glamorgan Assizes. The case arose out. of the tragic consequences of a youth’s intrusion on the colliery premises of Messrs Cory Bros., Ltd., at Ogmore Vale. An electric fence had been erected to prevent, pilfering during the coal dispute, and it was alleged that Bryn mor Edward John, aged 18 years, collided with this fence and was electrocuted. Mr Justice Finlay quashed the indictment against, the company, holding that the Criminal Justice Act, 1925, did not alter the ruling of standing authorities jthat a limited liability company is incapable of felony. Three of the colliery officials, Thomas Hardee, shift engineer. Temple Davies, power station engineer, and Robert Illingworth, electrical engineer, were also indicted for manslaughter. They were found not guilty and discharged.
