A MIDNIGHT BLAZE
WIDOW’S LOVE FIGHT woiyie: iard to save her HOME (Special to ‘ ‘ Chronicle. ”) AUCKLAND, May 1. A fire occurred at Silverdale a night or two ago under particularly distressing circumstances, when the home of Mrs Cox was totally destroyed. Airs Cox was alone in the house, which is situated amongst trees half a mile from the nearest neighbours. She awakened about midnight by the smell of fire and ran out to find the kitchen ablaze. She made frantic efforts to save such of her goods as was possible but the task, to a woman attired only in her nightdress, and in the chill of a winter’s night, was as unpleasant as could well be imagined. However she recovered a few articles and what gave her some consolation was that she was able to rescue a little nest of kittens who shared her home. With buckets of water she next essayed to save the adjoining outbuildings, and in this she was successful, after several hours of strenuous work. The position in regard to insurance is not yet known.
