NEW ZEALAND CUT OUT

AMERICAN TOURISTS SEQUEL TO PRESS ATTACKS. (Special to “Chronicle.”) Considerable offence was taken by American tourists who visited New Zealand and Australia on the liners Franconia and Carinthia at the criticism they received in the columns of the Press. Whether as a result* of this or not, the organisers of the tours have decided to omit the Dominion and the Commonwealth from the itineraries of future tours. Complaint was made at the time by the tourists and the matter was taken up by the New Zealand Tourist League when in January last the Carinthia, conveying the tourists, reached Sydney, and a cablegram was sent that the visitors complained of the comment made on them by New Zealand papers. The League wrote immediately to the Carinthia’s owners and asked for fuller information about the complaints so that it might, if necessary, make further inquiries in order to remove any genuine grievance. By the Aorangi’s last mail the League received the following communication from the agents, Raymond, Whitcombe, and Company, of Boston, United States: —“The clipping .from the Auckland papers that you sent us seems to sum up the feelings of the passengers in the matter. To our mind the attitude of the Press, in Australia particularly, was entirely undignified, and this left in the minds of the passengers very unpleasant feelings. On our previous year’s cruise there were similar occurrences, and our visit to Perth and Fremantle especially was made unpleasant by the attitude and audible comments on the part of those ashore at the time of our arrival. We *do not feel that it is worth while going into this matter more seriously with you, as we have cut New Zealand and Australia from our itineraries, and for the present, at least, abandoned our visits to your part of the world. ’ ’
