DEAUNGS IN PEARLS RUINING A POLITICAL CAEEEB (A and N.Z.) LONDON, April 27. Israel Melcher, aged 54, was charged at Old Bailey with attempting to blackmail Harold Rubin, a wealthy pearl dealer and the prospective Conservate candidate for Wednesday. The evidence showed that Rubin’s father acquired a fortune from the West Australian pearl tiade and sent Melcher to Shark’s Bay buying pear.?-. Melcher said that he lived for a ir.nely seven years there and then his health broke down. The prosecution alleged that Melcher threatened to-disclose that Rubin was paying secret commissions, thus ruining Rubin’s political career. It is also alleged that Melcher retained papers appertaining to Rubin’s business. Rubin denied all the allegations and the case was adjourned.
