THE CIVIC ELECTIONS

Sir, —It is not the province of the Church to interfere in questions of national or civic politics. It is, however, the duty of the clergy 1o stress tho Christian standard of life in a professedly Christian community. May T, therefore, urge the importance of our best men considering carefully their duty to the community if they are invited to stand for civic positions. Such positions entail much sacrifice of time and often of money. Nothing but a consciousness of work undertaken as a Christian duty can ever repay the sacrifice. Men with brains and administrative talent can give community service community service is of the essence nr Christian living. There is a danger in our day that the loose hold which this generation has upon religion will manifest itself in excuses and refusals ta give time and talent to the common weal without personal return. The next generation, I predict— and there are clear signs of it—will hold faith faster and be more unselfish. Let it not be that they shall point the finger of scorn at our day and generation and be able to say: 4 ‘They cared for themselves alone!” For us ordinary folk the way of duty is clear. Whether in all their actions mayors and councillors please us or not, we must give them honour and appreciation for trying to do community service as well as they can. Did we give them their due in this respect, their service would be worthy of the standard of honour we sot. R. CREED MEREDITH, Vicar of Wanganui.
