QUESTIONS ON THE HIGHWAY TRAFFIC TALLY AT WESTMERE A red flag, a white umbrella protecting two officials from the scorching sun, and a barrier compelling motorists to stop—these were outward and visible signs of a traffic census begun yesterday at Westmere, on the main road through Waitotara County. The object of the tally is to determine the amounts of local and outside traffic using the roads, and it will be taken between 7 a.m. and • 7 p.m. each day for a week, except on Wednesday, when the census will bo tn operation for the full 24 hours. Motorists, stopping at the barrier, are asked their destination, and whence they have come. Thus it happens that a lady driver may chirp: Westmere to Wanganui/’ as she leaves the tallymen with a cheery wave of the hand.
