INTER-CLUB MATCHES SUPREMACY OF ST. JOHN’S. WANGANUI CLUB BEATEN. In an interesting inter-club match on Saturday the St. John’s Club established its definite superiority over Wanganui. The winning margin was comfortable, St. John’s winning 12 matches to Wanganui’s four. Features of the engagement were the defeat of Al. L. Lampe by N. B. Barkman, and of Aliss G. Calver by Aliss Alvcrs.
St. John’s won all the combined doubles matches, though Dr. Christie and Aliss Calver were beaten only after a marathon struggle. Detailed results follow, St. John’s players being mentioned first:— Ladies’ singles.—Miss Alyers beat Aliss Calver, 9—5; Aliss Purcell beat Airs Richardson, 9 —5; Airs Jones beat Airs Barkman, 9 —5; Aliss Cox lost to Mrs Bogle, 4 —9. Men’s singles.—Lampe lost to Barkman, 6 —9; Marshall beat J. Powdrell 9—5; Hawkins beat Christie, 9—5; Forbes beat Pownall, 9—5. Ladies’ doubles.—Afisses Alyers and Purcell beat Aliss Calver and Airs Richardson, 9—4; Mrs Jones and Aliss Cox lost to Mrs Bogle and Airs Barkman, 3—9.
Men’s doubles. —Lampe and Marshall beat Barkman and J. Powdrell, 9 —4; Hawkins and Forbes lost to Christie and Pownall 6 —9.
Alixed doubles. —Lampe and Miss Alyers beat Christie and Aliss Calver, 14 —12; Marshall and Miss Purcell beat J. Powdrell and Airs Richardson 9 —5; Hawkins and Airs Jones beat Barkmau and Mrs Barkman, 9—7; Forbes and Aliss Cox beat Pownall anti Airs Bogle, 9 —7. ST. JOHN’S CLUB A team of ten men from the St. John’s Club journeyed to Bulls over the week-(/d, in response to an invitation from the Bulls Tennis Club. The weather, which did not appear hopeful, brightened considerably on route, and by the time Bulls was reached perfect weather prevailed. Play opened at 11 a.m. at the Bulls Club, which possesses four very fine asphalt courts ideally situated at rhe foot of a cliff. The order of play was singles in the morning, which were mainly won by Bulls, and after an adjournment fojjy lunch the doubles were played, St. John’s eventually winning the day by a small margin of four sets. Mrs. Ralfe kindly gave her services for the provision of a dainty afternoon tea, and the visitors take this opportunity of thanking her.
