BUSY FIREMEN

WANGANUI BRIGADE’S WORK SEVERAL CALLS YESTERDAY. The prolonged period of dry weather is now showing its effects in Wanganui, and much of the grass fringing the railway tracks is extremely liable to take fire from sparks from passing engines. Probably it was because of this that the Central Fire Brigade was .called to no fewer than three grass fires yesterday near railway crossings. At 11.24 a.m. the brigade was called to the Fergusson Street crossing, and again proceeded to the same place at 12.40 p.m. Grass fires were burning on each occasion but were subdued with no damage to property. A grass fire at the Guyton Street crossing at 12.14 p.m. was also extinguished before any damage had occurred. Last evening at 6.52 o’clock, the brigade answered a call to a blazing motor truck standing outside Martin and Vernon’s garage in Taupo. The truck—a light vehicle owned by Mr. G. Burns, of Harrison Street—was taking petrol from a pump when a quantity overflowed on to the hot exhaust pipe. The flames had a firm hold when tlte brigade arrived and were extinguished only after a considerable amount of damage was done to the bodywork of the truck. The tube of the pump also caught alight but the damage was negligible.
