PRINTERS’ CONFERENCE

TARIFF MATTERS REVIEWED ELECTION OF OFFICERS. (Per Pre** Aeeoclatlon.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 14. At the twentieth annual meeting of the Master Printers’ Industrial Association the president (Mr. ,T. Somerville) dealt at length with, many matters affecting the industry. Dealing with, the matter of the revision of tariff, the president said that he would like to point out that the remedy for the present decrease in business did not lie entirely in an increase of tariff, nor would the imposition of a further duty stop the importation of lines that could be manufactured in New Zealand. “The solution lies along two main avenues, an increase in the production of our primary products and a rise in the world’s parity, over which we have no control,” he said. ( The other is to reduce importations to a point where the balance of exports over imports will be sufficient to meet the necessary interest on loans floated abroad. A better solution lies to a great extent in the hand of the local manufacturer, who should insist on being supplied with. New Zealandmade goods.’ ’ The following officers were elected: president, Mr. T. Somerville; vice-presi-dent, Mr. W. C. Cargill; council, Messrs Mcßobie (Auckland), A. Willis (Wanganui), A.
