OHAKUNE

BOROUGH COUNCIL [ From the “ Chronicle’s ” Special Correspondent. ] The monthly meeting of the Ohakune Borough Council was held on Friday evening, the Mayor (Mr G. Goldfinch), and Councillors Clemett, Dinwoodie, Fletcher and Richardson being present. Applications for the renewal of billiard saloon licenses were granted W. J. Bradcock, H. R. Eaton and O. Olsen, and L. Wiles. The Public Works engineer wrote with reference to the bad state of the Raetihi road controlled by the Borough and it was decided that a letter be forwarded stating that this will be attended to. The Main Highways Board wrote asking for return of fees collected by the council. A communication was received from the Wanganui Autumobile Association with reference to Ohakune not appearing on the signposts recently erected in various parts of the district, and apologising for the omission.—Received. An application from the four billiard saloon proprietors in the borough was received, asking for a reduction in the license fees for each table and was referred to the By-laws Committee. The electrical engineer reported that owing to the shortage of water it would be necessary to run the semiDeisel engine at the power station frequently during the next month or two. Good progress was being made with the work authorised by the Public Works Department. During this work it had been necessary to cut off the power periodically. It was reported by the borough inspector that 120 dog licenses and 15 swine licenses had been issued. There were still a number of dogs unregistered in the borough. With reference to speeding in the borough, a resolution was carried that the local police be asked to co-operate with the borough inspector to bring offenders to justice, and that stopwatches bo procured. It was decided that repairs be effected to the footbridge near the Bolwood tearooms, Ohakune Junction. It was decided that the services of the temporary driver of the motor lorry be retained in the meantime. A proposal that action be taken to have noxious weeds eradicated in the borough was agreed to.
