THE BIG POLL

NOT YET DECIDED AUSTRALIA’S REFERENDUM A DEFEAT FORECASTED. PROGRESS RESULTS FAVOUR “NOES.” E By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 5, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 5. The weather was fine yesterday for the referendum, and polling was heavy. On the figures received up to a late k hour last night, which, however, form only a small quota of the total vote, both Mr. Bruce’s proposed alterations to the Constitution appear doomed to defeat. Except in New South Wales, where there is a small majority for “Yes,” all other States favour “No.” In order to carry the proposals it is necese sary to obtain consent both by the majority of people in Australia and a majority of the States. >f f PLAIN INDICATION d MAJORITY IN OPPOSITION. f •t COUNT FAR FROM COMPLETE. f i(1 Received Sept. 6, 1.10 a.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 5. e The referendum count was continued i- to-day. Official figures supplied too night, though far from complete, plainn ly indicate that the electorate is opposed to the proposed alterations in the Constitution. In New South Wales “Yes” still holds a slight majority on the first question, but the “Noes” are well ahead on the second question. In every other State the “Noes” have a heavier and increasing majority.
