WINDBAG BEATS VALICARE

A THRILLING FINISH. RAMPION DOWNS LIMERICK. SYDNEY SPRING CARNIVAL OPENS. Received September 5, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 5. The spring racing carnival opened with the Warwick Farm meeting, which I was held in beautiful weather. The course was in excellent condition. New Zealand was well represented. Rampion annexed the Hobartville Stakes ‘after a great battle between him and the New Zealander, Limerick. Windbag added to his laurels by snatching ,a half-neck victory from the unbeaten Valicare after the latter had held the lead to within a few yards of the winning post. The New Zealanders, Rapine and Royal Tea. finished third and fourth respectively in this race, which was the centre of great interest. This is Valicare’s first defeat in the eight races in which she has started. Windbag put up a course record, beating Hemisphere’s time, 1.394, made last year, by one and a-half seconds. Pantheon’s time in the Spring Handicap was also a course record. Other New Zealanders ran as follows:—Bright Light, unplaced in the Hurdles; Young Lochinvar, unplaced in the Cambelltown Handicap; Count Cavour, unplaced in the Spring Handicap; Cawnpore and Siaosi, unplaced in the Glenlee Handicap. Star Stranger made an excellent bid for the Spring Handicap, running into second place. Principal results: — Spring Handicap.—Pantheon (Tracery—Scotch Rose) 1, Star Stranger 2, Lucky Thrice and Boonala dead heat 3. Thirteen started. From a bunched field Pantheon macle his run at the distance, stalled off a hot challenge from Star Stranger, and won by two and abalf lengths. Time: 2.184. Hobartville Stakes. The lastnamed, under the whip, made a great effort to overhaul the hard ridden leader, but the latter, finishing splendidly, won by two and a-half lengths. Time: 1.264. Warwick Stakes. Windbag began to decrease the gap. and caught Valicare a few strides from the post and had the best of a most exciting finish by half a neck. Rapine was four lengths away, with Royal Tea next.
