SPORT OF RACING

WANGANUI TRAINING NOTES FORM AT MANAWATU HUNT MEETING Training operations on the local tracks are looking up, for there has already been the advent of a large number of visiting trainers with their horses engaged at the Wanganui meeting next Thursday and Saturday, and up to Wednesday the tracks will present an animated appearance in the early mornings. The Manawatu Hunt Club raced at Awapuni on Saturday, and several horses were seen out there that claim engagements hers this week. Consequently the story of the racing holds special interest for local sportsmen.

MANAWATU HUNT CLUB , ANNUAL EACE MEETING. 'AMI FOX WINS THE HANDICAP. AOTEA BOA RUNS AWAY WITH HUNT CUP. The Manawatu Hunt Club held its annual race meeting on the Awapuni course on Saturday in fine weather. The going was a bit dead, and the at- [ tendance was only fair. The totaiisator handled £11,411, against £10,585 last year, when the fixture was held at I Feilding in rain and mud. The increase yesterday was £826. Three Runners Only. The opening event attracted only three runners, and of the £398 invested on the Machine Home Made, by ’ Thurnham from Housewife, carried the \ largest portion. Tea Leaves made the running, the favourite going up to him at the five furiongs. Mountain Crag made his run on the turn and looked a winner, but he came too soon and Home Made beat him in the end by half a length, with. Tea Leaves three : lengths away. Volplane’s First Success. There was increased speculation in the Maiden. Comedic, a hall-brother Dy Joculator to Los Gatos, was always favourite, but a late rush set in on i Volplane, carrying the Warplane—Sinapis colt up to within 58 tickets of : Comedic, with Mountain Star the only other seriously considered. At the : start the order was Volplane, Limonite, White Ringlet, Comedic, Some Lad and Rising Star. As they came into the straight White Kinglet had headed Volplane. Comedic and Limonite being handy. Volplane went away inside the distance to score by a length from the fast-finishing Mountain Star, who was half a length in front c.f Rising Star. Then came White Ringlet, Soy, Comedic and Limonite in a line. An Easy Win. Half a dozen contested the Hunt Cup. • backers going strongly for Birkenose, with Adrienne and Aotea Roa also coming in for support. Suweileh led for a mile and then fell, leaving Tareroa in the lead. Then Aotea Roa went to the j front and stayed there, winning easily by about twenty lengths from the fav- I ourite, with Kovno a length away and Adrienne next. Royal Game Again. Our Jack was at a short price in the Aokautere Hack, with Royal Land a good second choice. Royal Game jumped out from a good start, and led along : the back from Un Arlington, Our Jack. Girribilile and Royal Land. There was i little alteration at the half mile, but I crossing the top the field closed up, ex- I cepting Royal Land, who tailed off. j Royal Game, Lin Arlington. Girribilile, i Our Jack and Petal was the order into the straight, and the first named hung : on to win by half a length from Lin ! Arlington, with Our Jack three lengths away third. Pangolin was fourth, and | Girribillie and Petal next. A Spirited Finish. The public picked on Labour Morn, ' Oneroa and Hokioi in the Hack Steeple- i chase, and that their summing-up was correct was proved when the trio finished within half a length .»f each other. Donoghue, Hokioi, Oneroa, and Labour Morn was the order ha’< way through the race, and crossing the top 4 the last-named ran up to Oneroa in the lead, with Hokioi lying handy and Donoghue well back. Labour Morn and Oneroa fought out a hard finish, the former winning by a head, with Hokioi half a length away. Then at intervals came. Donoghue and Sometime. Tame Fox Comes Back. The Kairanga Handicap was a fine race, with Merry Day the unlucky one of the nine runners. Novar, Rascal and Beaumont were separated by only fifty tickets on the totaiisator, and there was a drop in the investments to Tame Fox. Benmure was the pacemaker up the straight, leading out from Gurnion, Rascal, Beaumont and Miss Hupana. Along the back Gurnion was a couple of lengths clear of Benmure, Tame Fox, Opa and Rascal, with Pantier tailed off. Opa moved up t the half mile, and the order into the home stretch was Benmure, Tame Fox, Beaumont, Gurnion, Opa, RascaL and Novar. At the distance Beaumont drew out. bur was at once challenged by Tame Fox, ■who went on to win by three-quarters of a length from Merry Day. The latter was flying at the finish, and just headed the tiring Beaumont for second money. Benmure was fourth, and the next to cross the line were Novar, Rascal, Opa and Miss Hupana.

f Won All The Way. Of the five starters in the Raumui j Hunters’ Hurdles Ayun Kara was en- ; trusted with most money. The favour- ; ite was up with the leaders all the [ way. only to weaken in the straight. Hallowmorn, running in the colours of Mr E. Riddiford, went to the fropt soon after the start and stayed there, although with half a mile to go it lookied as if both Ayun Kara and Mount ; Clyde would trouble him. The latter then weakened, and with the favourkite knocking the last hurdle hard Hallowmorn was left to win by two lengths from Rangisarto (ridden by an amateur). with Mount Clyde half a length • away and the favourite close up. Three in a Line. A field of eleven contested the closing event, the Flaxbourne Handicap. Penman was a slightly better favourite than Our Jack, making his second . appearance of the day. but not far away were Mister Gamp and Inner Harbour, all evenly supported in a good pool. When they had settled down Molto was setting a fast pace for Lin Arlington, Penman, Our Jack and Mountain Jean. With a couple of furlongs gone Molto had a break of five lengths, but she was stopping when she turned for home ahead of Lin Arlington, Penman. Inner Harbour, Mountain Joan and Our Jack. At the distance Lin Arlington was clear, and then Our Jack and Muster Gamp joined issue, and the trio went over the line locked together. At the third attempt the judge placed Lin Arlington first. Mister Gamp second and Our Jack third. After a gap came Penman, Molto, , Mountain Jean and Inner Harbour. FULL DETAILS. Kiwitea Bracelet Handicap. (Of 80 sovs.; 14 miles). 1— Home Made, 10.9, Mr J.
