CLAIMS COMMITTEES

TO RECOMMEND RELIEF PROBLEM OF DETERIORATED LANDS MACHINERY TO BE PUT INTO OPERATION [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 2. One of the big problems before the Minister for Lands is that of deteriorated lands. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, who is a practical farmer, has spent some time in a personal inspection of the areas concerned. Now a fresh move -with the object of putting things on a satisfactory footing is announced, namely, the appointment of two committees, whose duty it will be to report to the Land Board, who will make recommendations to tho Minister concerning applications for relief. Tho Act provides for revaluation of Crown sections, remission of rent, and advances for manures and fencing. The committees which have been appointed will operate in the central and western areas, which comprise the Kawhia, To Kuiti, Kaitiekc, Whangamomona, Mokau and Rotorua districts. For the northern portion of this area the committee will be Air G. W. Rich' ards, farmer, Otorohanga (chairman); Mr R. C. Pollock, Fields Inspector, Lands Department; Mr I. Sheehy, district valuer, Valuation Department. The southern committee will be Air James Wall, farmer, Porirua (chairman); Air R. J. Knight, an officer of the Land Department; Mr A. B. Jordan, district valuer, Valuation Department.

The personnel of the committee to operate in the Opotiki hinterland is not yet complete, but the Minister expects to announce the appointments at an early date.
