The first was when, in 1914, he • boarded his flagship, the Iron Duke, and was forced to tell her former chief, Admiral Sir George Callaghan, that he ■was taking over his command, which • Sir George had trained to a pitch of perfection never previously attained in anv navy.
The second was when he left New Zealand, of which he was GovernorGeneral from 1920 to 1924.
