A PERSONAL TRIUMPH

NEW ZEALAND TO BE CONGRATULATED LONDON PRESS TRIBUTE. By Telegraph—Per Press Assn. —Copyright. Received November 5, 7.15 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 5. The 4 ‘Morning Post,” in a leader, entitled “New Zealand’s Voice,” says: The world is much occupied with elections at the present time, New Zealand following Canada hnd Australia following New Zealand. Australians may well hope that the verdict of their Dominion will be as decisive as that of New Zealand, whore a strong and stiablc Government is assured. Mr Coates, successor to Mr Massey of honoured memory, won a victory surpassing even his own supporters’ expectations. Ho has a majority over n.li parties. As in other countries, the Liberal Party seems discredited. In the clash between Socialist and njnSocialist there is no room for Liberalism. It only gets in the way. In n Parliamentary sense Labour ceases to be formidable. New Zealand electors Lave shown what they th'nk of Labour’s attitude towards the shipping strike. The election is a personal triumph for Mr Coates, who has an opportunity to become Us great an influence as Mr Scddon and Mr Massey were in their generations. New Zealand is to be congratulated upon its capacity to produce the man when the hour strikes. Mr Coates has proclaimed his intention to follow the policy of Mr Massey, which may be epitomised in the phrase “New Zealand is with the Mother Country to a man. ’ ’

LONDON “TIMES” ON THE ISSUE PRAISE FOR MR COATES LONDON, Nov. 4. The “Times,” commenting on the New Zealand election prospects, pUys tributes to Mr Coates for carrying on the Massey tradition, and calls attention to the fact that in the disheartening story of Empire settlement New Zealand is the only Dominion showing an increase in the total of British immigrants. “The people of this country will think gratefully of the courageous policy of Mr Coates and his Government.” The “Times” also calls attention to the fact that the election issue is complicated by the additional embarrassment of the prohibition referendum, adding: “This question is surely one for separate consideration and not to be dragged into controversies which have not the slightest bearing on the liquor laws.” SIR JOSEPH WARD’S RETURN GREAT ENTHUSIASM. (Special to “Chronicle.”) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 5. Enthusiasm over Sir Joseph Ward’s return is unprecedented. He received before midday over 600 telegrams of congratulation, some from Britain, America and Australia. Tauranga and Awarua join in saying that defeat has been wiped out now. THE PAHIATUA RE-COUNT COMPLETION ON TUESDAY NEXT. [Per Press Association.] PAHIATUA, Nov. 5. The official recount for the Pahiatua scat is expected to be completed by Tuesday. Absentee votes have’ increased to 443. LYTTELTON RESULT STILL IN DOUBT CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 5. Lyttelton result is still in doubt. Opinion this morning favours the chances of Nir Lyons, the Reform candidate, winning when the absentee and seamen’s votes are counted. There are five hundred of the former tind one hundred of the latter. The official count begins on Saturday. The present totals are: Mr McCombs 4614 and Mr Lyons 4609.
