SHEEP FOR RUSSIA

PURCHASE IN UNITED STATES TO IMPROVE FLOCKS LN MOUNTAIN REGIONS. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE. Received Nov. 3, 8.5 p.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 2. M. Perefer Kowitz and Professor Michael Ivanov, representatives of the Soviet Commissariat of Agriculture, who recently arrived to inquire into American sheep breeding, have purchased three thousand rams in the United States for export to Russia for the purpose of improving flocks in the steppe and mountain regions of the Caucasus, Turkestan and Siberia. The representatives declared that Russia hopes ultimately to grow all the -wool required for domestic purposes. A first shipment of 1200 rams has already gone forward to Novarossisk, and others will be shipped during the present week. The purchase consists for the greater part of flock rams and ewes. The Russians are ready to unundertake stud operations. The shipments arc valued at 250,000 dollars. M. Perefer Kowitz stated that it will be necessary to make a further purchase of fine wool sheep during the year, and for many years to come, before Russia can produce sufficient wool to statisfy the needs of its industry.
