"PEN OR SWORD?”
STATUE ANNOYS INDIANS POLICY OF SMASH CALCUTTA, Oct. 17. A sensation has been caused in Lahore by the mutilation of the statue of Sir John Lawrence, the first LieutGovernor of the Punjab, who afterwards was Viceroy of India. The. pen for the right hand of the statue is missing, and half the sword in the left hand has been broken. The pieces were found by the police thrown on a lawn nearby. Police now are guarding the statue, which for several years has been an obIject of resentment on the part of PunI jab extremists because of its inscription, “Will you be governed by the pen or the sword? ’ ’ Recently in India the practice of mutilating statues, has been increasin’: contrary to the traditional attitude of respect.
