HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE. “THE BRIDGE OF SIGHS.” CHARLIE CHAPLIN. - “The Bridge of Sighs” is the story of Billy Craig, the reckless, spendthrift son of the President of a Steamship Company. To make good an i.o.u. young Craig steals from the company and a trusted employee is sent to gaol for the offence. Stung by remorse, Billy is prepared’ to confess the crime, but his father, fearing that the confession would kill Billy’s mother, has his son shanghaied to spend a year aboard one of his ships, while innocent Harper, the employee, crosses the Bridge of Sighs for a year’s imprisonment. How Billy, returned to the city, finds his moral salvation through the love of Harper’s daughter, is unfolded dramatically in the succeeding scenes. The film, which is based upon a story by Charles K. Harris, the song-writer, is interpreted by a cast including Creighton Hale, Alec. B. Francis, Richard Tucker and Ralph Lewis. Charlie Chaplin again proves that he is the most popular comedy artist showing on films. A tale of pioneer life in the middle west is unfolded in “The Hoosier Schoolmaster.” Book at Upton's till 5 p.m. then The Rialto till 6.30 after ring 2863.
FIREWORKS DISPLAY. The splendid success of the fireworks display arranged by the Queen Alexandra Band and the Wainoni Fireworks Co., of Christchurch, early in the year, has eucQuraged the promoters to arrange for another grand display, to to be hold at Cook’s Gardens on Yruy Fawke’s night, Thursday, November 5. The Wainoni Company are famed for the excellent variety and the effectiveness of their fireworks, and a very fine display may be expected. The Queen Alexandra Band will render selections, and a strong additional interest -will be the monster Guy Fawkes Procession and Parade. Several handsome prizes are being given for the best “guys,” and it is expected that large entries will be received. The procession, headed by the band, will march through the city, and then parade on Cook’s Gardens —and a feature of the fireworks display will be the burning of a giant “Guy.” Further announcements will be made through the daily papers.
