SOME RECORDS

BABIES AND THEIR WEIGHT. The average weight of a baby at birth is Sib. Recently a girl babe—one of twins—born in England weighed only 11b. Even this does not constitute a record for smallness. The world’s record in this respect was achieved by a baby born in 1882, which weighed only B|oz. Its tiny feet were kept warm in woollen socks taken from a doll, six inches high belonging to an elder sister. This record was run fairly close by that of a boy babe born* in Kingsbridge. He weighed exactly lOoz. His head was no bigger than a horse-chestnut. His mouth was too small to admit an ordinary lead-pencil, while his mother ’s wedding ring slipped easily up his legs and thighs. A 15oz baby was born to a couple named Poe. Its head was not so big as a billiard ball. Going to the other extreme, babies weighing 201 b at birth are by no means uncommon.
