THE ORCHARD

Keep the hoe going among the trees in the orchard. That is, if it is too small to use a horse and plough in it. Tho latter is the best method of keeping the orchard free from weeds. If “aphis” should appear on tha trees spray them with nicotine mixture. Spray the pears with lime sulphur to check the “black spot.” Tho apple trees at present look as if there is going to be a good crop this year. Tree tomatoes may be planted now. This is the best time to plant passion fruit. Do not use any manure when pllanting. They should be loft for about twelve months before any fertiliser is added. In tho orchard, tho digging among tho trees should be continued if not already finished. The recent very wet weather will make black spot very prevalent this year. As most of the pears have finished flowering (except Williams Bon Chretien) a spraying of lime sulphur as soon as tho blossoms htive dropped will go a long way towards checking this fungus, which spoils a tremendous lot of fruit cyery year. Some varieties of pears have been cut right out because they take it so easily. Tho best way to. prune a tree that is affected badly is with the axe. If it is left it will only affOct ail th a trees near it.
