Entries for the Club Fours at the Union Club close to-morrow morning at 11 o’clock. The Aramoho Boating Club held a very successful opening last Saturday. There was a large attendance of rowing enthusiasts and several crews took the water. Powell (str.), Darbyshire (3), I’. Everett (2), Malcolm (bow). Caiman (str.), Mowat (3), Shepherd (2), Thomas (bow). Boulton (str.), Durie (3), Atwood (2), Laird (bow). Thomson, E. H. Adams, A. Brinley, E. Winspear, R. Seal, B. Ayshford, C. Boyd, F. Boyd, T. Trezise, J. Buckley, A. Latty, F. Killen. Any new member who wishes to compete in the above event should sec that his name is on the list before Monday.
There may perhaps be some disappointment in the fact that the Hamilton four will not bring back to the Dominion laurels simalr to those gained by the New Zealand eight last March, but in view of the strong opposition, the achievement of the New Zealand champions at the Henley regatta on Saturday deserves every commendation. The Hamilton crew took part in only one race, the Stewards’ Challenge (fours) Cup. Australian States were well represented, and among the contestants were the following:—Bundaberg Club (the champion crew of the Mary River, Queensland), Melbourne Club (last season’s Victorian champion four), Buckingham Club (champion four of Tasmania), Mannan Club, South Australia, and the Western Australia Club’s four, whilst several States had more than one crew in the race. The New Zealanders were, therefore, competing against distinguished oarsmen, -and the fact that in the semi-final, the winners of the cup (West Australia) defeated New Zealand only by two feet is evidence of a laudable performance on the part of the Hamilton crew. It is worthy of note that this year was the first occasion on which West Australia and New Zealand had been represented in the Stewards’ Challenge Fours at the Melbourne Henley.
