Charge of Theft. A resident of Ohingaiti was charged with the theft from the roadside of half a cord of firewood, the property of the Rangitikei County Council. Accused pleaded guilty. Constable Thompson said that accused admitted taking the firewood. He (tho constiable) knew’ nothing against the accused, who had done everything in his power to clear up the matter.

The magistrate said he did not regard the theft so seriously tis theft from shops or from the railway, as a public body or a private individual who left material on the roadside always did so with a certain amount of risk, ft was nevertheless a serious offence. The County Council must of necessity leave much of their property on the roadside and they must be protected. It did not necessarily follow that because he would inflict a fine in this case that such lenient treatment would bo meted out to future offenders. He amphasised that county material, wherever it was, must not be touched. A conviction was entered and a fine of £3 was imposed. Accused was ordered to return the wood. OHINGAITI DANCE. A very successful dance wias held in the Ohingaiti Hall on Friday evening, when a large attendance of dancers spent a most enjoyable time. The function was held under the auspices of the local P. and T. staff, and the proceeds were in aid of a school piiano. Excellent music was provided by Mr. W. Down, while an “extra” was played by Mr. Aspinall. The supper was up to the usual high standard, and Messrs Aspinall and Murphy as MAC.’s were the right men in the right place.

SWIMMING POOL. A “working bee” was held at the swimming pool on Mondlay, and much was done towards effecting the proposed improvements. There was a large number of men, and a team of boys who also worked strenuously numbered 22. It is understood that a similar “bee” would complete the work in about half a day. HUNTERVILLE PIPE BAND. EUCHRE AND DANCE. Another very successful euchre party was held in the Scots’ Hall on Monday evening, when nine tables of enthusiastic players were in progress. Prizes were won by Miss Lundquist (donated by Mr. A. D. Hunter), and M. G. Stratford (donated by Mr. J. M. Abel). “Boobies” were annexed by Miss Doris Exeter and Mr. Holland. An enjoyable dance was afterwards held, when music was provided by Misses C. Lundquist, J. Chisholm and M. Davies and Mr. D. Abel. Mr. M. A. Coleman carried out the duties of M.C. GENERAL NEWS.

The children’s annual fancy dress ball takes place on Friday evening. There was a good yarding of cattle at the Cattle Fair yesterday. There was a fair “bench” of buyers, land satisfactory prices were realised. The opening of the bowling green will probably take place next week. The Hunterville Pipe Band has been engaged to supply items at a grand concert in Palmerston on November 30.
