SEAFIELD TOURNAMENT IMLAY SAUNDERS WINS CHAMPIONSHIP. SPRINGVALE CUP GOES TO GILBERT. The Seafield Golf Club’s tournament, which has been highly successful, concluded yesterday. With the exception of a heavy shower when the prizes were being presented, the weather was fine, though rather cold. Imlay Saunders won the Seafield Championship, beating Seifert 3 and 2, and Shlan Gilbert won the Gonville Cup, beating Edgar. The prizes, a very handsome lot, were distributed by the President of the Club (Mr. J. R. Foster) who made a happy speech. Mr. Imlay Saunders, in accepting tho championship, paid a warm tribute to the Seafield links. He said the improvement made in two years was marvellous, and in the course of time the links would be second to none in New Zealand. Other players of experience were equally complimentary. It was generally agreed that the links had all the essentials for perfection. The proceedings concluded with cheers for the winners, the referee in the championship (Mr. J. Harold) land the president of the club. Prize List. The prize list was as follows: Seafield Championship: Imlay Saunders beat G. Seifert 3 and 2. Gonville Cup: S. Gilbert beat Edgar. First Medal Match: L. Cathro 1, W. l ints 2. Second Medal Match: P. Ellcrm 1. B. McNiven 2. Two best rounds in cup: J. C. Bidwill. First Bogey Match: L. Masters 1. F. Shirriffs 2. Second Begov Match: C. S. Brown 1, C. Gilbert 2.' Third Medal Match: Moore Hunter 1. FINAL. The final was played after lunch. up. No. 8, “ East gate. ” —Each drove a long ball, and each found tho rough, Beifert to the left and Saunders to the right. Each overshot the green with his second, Seifert to the right and Saunders to the left. Seifert’s approach was the better, and he holed out 4 to s.—Saunders one up. No. 9, “Boundary,” saw long driving and pretty approaching, Seifert winning.—All square. No. 10, “Seaview,” was halved. Both were about a yard from the tin with their second, but missed their putts. — All square. No. 11, “Quarries,” saw Saunders driving superbly. Seifert had the same length, but pulled badly. Saunders’ second was two feet from the flag, and he holed out in 3. Seifert’s second overshot the green. His approach ran across the tin by a foot. —Saunders one up. Both were on No. 12 green with their second. Saunders’ drive was another beauty, Seifert again pulling Both missed their putts and halved the hole. —Saunders one up. At No. 13, the drives found the green. Saunders being within inches and Seifert about four feet away.— Saunders remained one up. At No. 14 both had beautiful firsts and seconds. Saunders was alongside the tin with a beautiful Approach and he won 6 to 7. —Saunders 2 up. “The Problem,” No. 15, was halved and then the game ended with Saunders winning the sixteenth. He got into the rough with his drive, but recovered w’ith a very fine shot. Seifert did. not take advantage of an excellent drive, and his approach was very weak. Saunders’ putt lay on the lip <f the tin and Seifert missed, giving Saunders the championship by 3 and 2.
