FIXTURES Oct. 26, 28—Gore R.C. Oct. 29, 31—Poverty Bay Turf C. Nov. 7, 9 —Auckland R.C. Nov. 7. 9, 11, 14—Canterbury J.C. Nov. 14. 16—Hamilton R.C. Nov. 18— Ashhurst-PohMurina R.C. Nov. 18. 19—Winton Nov. 22—Levin R.C. Nov. 26, 28—South Canterbury J.C. Nov. 28. 3t)—Takapuna J.C. Nov. 28, 30—Feilding J.C. NOTES AND COMMENTS Some people say that weight stops the best of them, but the public ex pected Bouogne to carry his 10.11 in the last race at Waverley, and he was the only horse at the meeting to be supported to the extent of four figures For once he was not in front at any stage of the race. Euphonium appeared to bo beaten for pace in the early stages oi the Waverley Cup, drifting back on the rails to the tail of the field in three, furlongs. H«‘ gave a somewhat similai display it may be remembered, at Wanganui, but on that occasion did not finish as he did on Alocdav.

Income looked a bit on the jolly sidv when he contested the Waverley Cup, and it was rather surprising to see him rushed to the front at the start alongside Vaward. His rider wisely stead ied him a little later, and the son’ o> Guianforte was left with a good fin ishing run. At 12.30 p.m. yesterday Muraahi was scratched for all engagements at Riecarton. He still has engagements at Auckland next month. The Campfire gelding never showed any dash in the Waverley Cup, being about seventh throughout. He looked in pretty good order. A|s the result -of their recent sue rcsses The Banker and Merry Day have been rehandicapped for the New Zealand Cup. The Banker goes up 31b C7.1l to 8.1 and Merry Day 6lb (7.7 : to 7.13). Mask, the half-brother, by Limond. to Rational, showed a bit of form when he ran third in the Wilsou Stakes ou Monday. On his only previous appear anec on the turf, at the Wanganui spring meeting, he ran very green. Ou Monday he was finishing on. Spode, winner of the two-year-eld race at Trentham on Saturday is by Saucy Sue’s half brother, Tea Tray Cby Ihe Tetrarch), from Exclusive, white Kiosk, winner of a similar race or; Monday, is also by Tea Tray. Phoenix Park scored his most ini nortant victory to date when he go', noui'- first in the Pearce Handicap on Monday. Te Kara’s win in the Champion Plato at Trentham will put him well •n the market for the New Zealand ?up. An enquiry was held into interference by Kilfaire with Te Kara, who in turn struck Shining Armour, in the straight during the running of the Wellington Handicap on Saturday. Satisfactory evidence was given and on action was taken. W. Donovan goes on from Trentham to Riccarton with Runnymede and Tiega. S. Waddell’s team for Riccarton coin prises Shirley, Llandudno, Beacon Light, Dazzling Light, Kilmoyler and Father O’Flynn. The enquiry by the Wellington stew ards into Captain Sarto’s running in Saturday’s hurdle race was concluded on Monday, the explanation given being accepted as satisfactory. Commendation, the winner of the Wellesley Stakes on Saturday, was originally bought at the Koutanui yearling sales by the Auckland trainer J. T. Jamieson, who passed him on to his present owner, Mr. W. H. Gais ford, who figures in the records as the purchaser at 200 guineas. Commendation has won his last three races, that at Trentham on Saturday alone being worth £6OO to the winner, so he must be considered one of the bargains of the year. No wonder the Waikato Hunt gets a very big total through the machine at Te Rapa. The Auckland “Star” reports that over 1500 passengers travelled by special trains *»n Monday morning from Auckland and New Market to the race meeting—a journey oi 85 miles.

Mr. G. M. Currie had the pleasure of seeing Commendation, whom he bred, win tho Wellesley. The youngster s eire, Limond, was imported from England by Mr. Currie. He is a beauti-fully-bred horse by Desmond from Lindal. by Bend Or from Sunrise, a granddaughter of Sunshine, ancestress of Martian, Boniform, etc. Eulogy, the dam of Commendation, has been a great matron and it falls to the lot of few studmasters to own a marc who has been so consistent in producing. Pennon (darn of Motley), Yarraidool. Humbug, Fulsome. Epitaph, Homage and Commendation make a great family.

Helen, who came from some distance back to beat all but Commendation in the Wellesley Stakes, is also by Limond. She is owned by her breeder, Mr. G. F. Moore, and she will win races when more experienced. Limited, who finished third, is a brother to Absurdurn. He is endowed with plenty of speed and on drier tracks will not take long to make a further return on the 75<i guineas paid for him by Mr. W. Me A. Dunctnn. Suggestion is to race at Ellerslie next month, and his fourth in the Pearce Handicap augurs well for him. Referring to Commendation’s win “Vedette” states that he just “lobs” along and has yet to be extended. J. Barry will not be at Christchurch to ride him in the Welcome Stakes, and naturally Mr. W. H. Gaisford is being inundated with ani»lieat ions for tho mount. L. G. Morris will probably be in the saddle. Mr. Gaisford will be

delighted with his success, for Commendation is the first really classicwinner he has owned. Tho two Rossendale two year-olds trained by P. Hazleman for Mr. C. E. FJgar raced very well iu the Taita Handicap. states “Vedette.” The Rossendale —Narilla filly Polonaise, who had run at Masterton, stuck to Bachelor for the greatest part of tho journey, back went back tn fifth place kt the end. Vertigern. the gelding by Rnsgendale from Pansy, finished on well With Spode, considering it vfa? his

first public appearance, and was beaten by tho narrowest of margins. It was a very good effort, for he will be improved immeasurably by the race. Good reports still come from Riccarton concerning Glentruin’s work, but it is said she may not be quite ready to show her best form next month. The southern three-year-old Money Order is pleasing his connections tat Riccarton. He has not yet gone further than a mile, but it is expected that he will prove equal to the Derby journey. Owners and trainers are reminded that all nominations for the annual fixture of the Ashhurst-Pohangina Club close on Friday next, October 30, at 9 p.m. The telegraph office closes at 8 p.m. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB SPRING MEETING HANDICAPS.
