MARTON

“THE GAY OLD DOG” AT TOWN HALL TO-NIGHT (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent j Hobart Henley presents Mrs Sidney Drew’s adaptation of “The Gay Old I Dog” at Marton Town Hall this (MonI day) evening. I The cast of characters is almost en- , tirely a feminine one, but the leading I role is masculine and the honour of • portraying it falls to John Cumberland. I After seeing the picture one cannot j conceive of anyone but John Cumberj land playing the part. It fits him—or I he it —like a glove. j John Cumberland is comparatively ; new to the screen. “The Gay Old .Dog,” was his first acting before the i camera, but he displayed no camera j consciousness. It so happens, however, I that some comedies he played in with j Mrs Sidney Drew have been released ! prior to “The Gay Old Dog.” ! The cast is a splendid one, carefully 1 chosen to portray the various difficult types. Gertrude Robinson, who has I been absent from the screen sin«?e she jplayed “May Blossom” for Para- | mount several years ago, plays the lead- | ing feminine role. Others in the cast i are Nell Tracy, Emily Lorraine, Inez i Marcel, Frances Neilson and Mary j Chambers. i RANGITIKEI RUGBY SUB-UNION ; The Hunterville Club has notified the ’ president of the Rangitikei Rugby-Sub- : Union that it intends to call a special I meeting of the union to consider an apj peal against the decision of the man- ; agement committee in reference to the I playing of a member against Hunter- ! ville for the Finnimore Cup, as such • player had not complied with residen- • tial qualifications. A meeting of the j Union will be called after the requisil tion has been received. MERGING OF RETAILERS AND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The meeting on Friday evening to consider the merging of the Marton Retailers’ Association with the Chamber of Commerce was very enthusiastic and most of the speakers were of the opinion that a combination of forces would be for the betterment of the district. The membership is sure to be largely increased and there is every prospect of the Chamber being heard of during the current season. The Mayor (Mr F. Purnell), at the conclusion of the meeting, stated that he was sorry, in a way, that such a live body as the Retailers’ Association was going to disband, but the combining of forces should enable the Chamber of Commerce to carry on with renewed energy. The town was greatly indebted to the Retailers’ Association for the good work that they had carried out in the past, and he expressed the appreciation of the Council and the Chamber for their assistance. Other speakers spoke in a similar strain, and there is no doubt that the newly-con-structed Chamber of Commerce will be of great assistance in the future.

THE FIRE AT MARTON JUNCTION A fire at Messrs Rogers Bros. ’ grocery shop on Station Street at midnight on Friday destroyed a good deal of stock. The fire brigade was quickly on the scene and with the aid of the chemical engine subdued the flames in a short time. However, the stock, valued at £4OO, was badly damaged by smoke, water and chemicals. It was insured in the Norwich Union office for £250 and the furniture and effects for £5O in the same office. Mr Leigh, the owner of the premises, is supposed to have £3OO on the building which, however, did not suffer to any great extent. The fire is thought to have originated in the sitting room at the back of the shop, quickly gaining a hold and spreading to the shop by a curtain between the shop and living room. THE PREMIER’S VISIT On account of the Premier’s visit to Marton on Wednesday next to lay the foundation stone of the new Post Office, Broadway from Signal Street to Follett Street will be closed for traffic between the hours of 4.45 and 6.30 p.m. GENERAL NEWS Marton Junction Cricket Club held an enjoyable social in the Junction Hall on Friday evening.
