LOCATING OIL

WONDERFUL INSTRUMENT PERFECTED IN AMERICA NEW YORK, Oct. 23. Believing that they will locate petroleum deposits better than the instruments now used, three oil companies have requested duplicates of the most sensitive measuring instruments in existence, one reacting to the weight of one-208-billionth part of an ounce, perfected by Professor Ralph Hartsough, of the Physics Department of the Colombia University, which is financing the experiment to test tho Einstein theory this winter, after which, believing he can multiply sensitivity a thousandfold, he will attempt the measurement of molecules. Professor Hartsough’s instrument is now one hundredfold more sensitive then tho Ectvos balance. The latter is ablo to detect oil and meta deposits by a weight not fine enough to show how tho sun or moon affects gravity at the earth’s surface. Professor Hartsough successfully recorded the effect produced in a fraction of a second by the changing of the position of the moon or the gravitational attraction the earth exerts on an object weighing one twenty-nine-thousandth part of an ounce. The apparatus utilises Michelson’s interferometer measurements of wavelengths and lights.—A. and N.Z. and Reuter.
