WEEK-END FIRES
HOUSE BURNED TO GROUND ON NO. 3 LINE At 1.30 o'clock on Saturday afternoon the City Fire Brigade received a call to Earle’s Building’s, situated at the corner of Guyton Street and the Avenue, where an outbreak of fire was discovered. The fire, which was in the rooms of Miss Shearer, milliner, was quickly subdued, and the only damage done was to stock in the workroom. A second call was received at 5.1 o’clock to the residence of Mr Spooner, of No. 3 Line. The brigade was quickly on the scene, but the flames had a good hold on the eight-roomed house. Owing to no water being available, the brigade could not quell the flames, which spread until the house was totally destroyed. It is understood that the building was insured for £6OO, but Mr Spooner is a. heavy loser.
