SATURDAY’S RACING

SURPRISES AT TRENTHAM ONE RACE TO FAVOURITE GOOD SPORT AT WAVERIEY Sportsmen have much to Interest them to-day in the account of the opening of the Wellington Baclng Club’s spring meeting at Trentham. The Wellesley Stakes, the two-year-old classic, went to the popular choice, Commendation, but in the handicaps the fancied candidates had little success. Nearer home the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club had a very enjoyable day’s sport at Waveriey, where the dividends averaged a good deal lower than they did at Trentham.

EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT

RACING AT WAVERLEY. OUTSIDER WINS HUNT CUP. The* weather was not very kind to the Efjinont-Wanganui Hunt Club on ■Saturday, the early morning rain probably keeping at home many who had intended to swell the crowd at the club’s annual meeting on the Waveriey racecourse. However, there was little rain later in the day. a shower or two really interfering but slightly with rhe afternoon's sport. The going was in good order, the fields were of very satisfactory dimensions, and the racing was always interesting. There was a little delay early in the dav, but in jpitn of the fact that the field in the Maiden Handicap had to-be divided, the officials quickly made up the lost time, the general handling of details by the secretary, Mr W. Macfarlane, and his colleagues being all that could be desired The course is well appointed. the new jockeys’ board being quite b gond feature, while the stand and rhe luncheon and tea rooms provided adequate accommodation. Favourites had a fair measure of success during the day. only one dividend running into double figures, and speculation was brisk, the total put through the machine being £BBBB, which exceeds by £257 the amount handled when the club raced at Wanganui in August of last year.

Good Picking. There was little pace on for the best part of a mile in the Hunters’ Hurdles, CThyrria being allowed to show the way. with Banjuke leading Lady Dolwill. while Ratapiko. who had dwelt at the post, was a long way hack. Running along the back Lady Doi will moved up. displacing Chyrria five furlongs front home, but Ban juke supplanted her before the turn was reached and led Into the straight from San Fera. The latter closed up at the last jump but Banjuhe had something in hand and drew away to win by a length and ahalf. Lady Dolwill was three lengths further back, with Husker. who was running on over the last hit, a good fourth. San Fera was just a better favourite than the winner. A Likely Maiden. With only five of the 26 acceptors Withdrawn, two divisions were necesBary. In the first division Sea Star justified the support accorded her by jumping out smartly and leading all the way. Her nearest attendants in the parly stages were Hineora and Pardon, who were joined by Elysianor as they rounded the turn. Sea Star held her own nicely in the run to the post, winning by a length from Elysianor, who finished well to beat Pardon by a couple of lengths, with Gold Plaid, a late arrival on the scene, close up. Sea Star is r three-year old by Day Comet— Sea Sprite, and looks likely to be heard of again. Argue All the Way. The second division provided a similar race, only more so, Argue shooting out from the barrier at a great pace and having a lead of ten lengths before they had gone half the journey. His rider. Anderson, sat still on the Antagonist gelding, and he finished up r comfortable winner by a length. Toapaiti and Caliwai put in a run on the last turn, and the former made a semblance of a race of it, but Caliwai did not finish on well. Demure, who had begun slowly, getting up to beat him for the empty honour of third place. Argue has a reputation for speed over very short courses. He was nicely handled and saw out the five furlongs without trouble. All Wind’s Decisive Victory. The eight coloured on the card for the Hack Hurdles were all saddled up and provided an interesting contest. Taitaiata, Strategy, and All Wind, in that order, carried a big share of the investments. Roosevate, who screwed a bit at the first jump, was the early leader from White Ranger and Glenleven, and running into the back White Ranger took charge, while All Wind headed Roosevate and Pourihoihoi. White Ranger was not long in front, All Wind displacing him before the five furlong post was reached. Strategy made a move a little further on, but All Wind was clear at the hurdle in the straight, and ran on to beat Strategy by three lengths. Taitaiata finished with a decent run, only a length behind Strategy, and then came White Hanger, Pourihoihoi and Gold Piece. It was a solid and promising effort on the part of the winner. A Gallant Struggle. A very heavy shower when the field paraded for the Waveriey Hack Handi-

J cap made matters unpleasant, and the 1 five starters returned to the paddock after doing their preliminaries. For- ■ tunately the rain lifted, and the horses were quickly at the post and away. Fillette showed out momentarily from Vaward and Grand Lupin, the lastnamed quickly running to the front. Vawaxd and Fillette continued to hold j second and third positions along the j back, but at the turn Kilburn shot up into second place, and a little further on threw out a challenge. Once in the 1 straight, however, he beat a retreat, ■ leaving Grand Lupin well clear of Vaward. The last-named finished gamely under pressure, and just got up in the last few strides to beat Grand Lupin by a head. Rangi Sarto was five lengths away, and Fillette next. Sensational Finish.

The good field of nine contested the Hunt Cup Steeplechase and gave a good exhibition of jumping, though it must be admitted that the fences were not very difficult, Suweilch set a good pace from the barrier, with Craigowan and Gold Breach in attendance, and when they had gone three furlongs Gold Breach took the lead from Suweilch and Craigowan, while Oneroa and Gilgai, some distance back, headed the rest. Craigowan was in front when the top turn was reached, displacing I Gold Breach, who lost his rider at the next jump. Running past the stand Suweilch and Craigowan were well clear of Oneroa and Gilgai, with Supporter still at a big interval. Suweilch dropped back a bit, and Craigowan, Oneroa and Gilgai were hard at each other all the way along the back stretch, where Supporter began to close up the gap. Oneroa was the first to give way rounding the turn, and Supporter, with a great burst of speed, headed Craigowan as (hey straightened op for home, but at the last jump Supporter crashed into th? wing r.nd fell. leaving Craig owan and Gilgai together. Gilgai car ried too many guns for Craigowan, and drew cut to win by five lengths. Price, who had never threatened danger, was seven lengths away, beating Oneroa in the ruu home, and Lochullia, Suweilch and Seaforte finished at intervals. The fences in the straight were very narrow, and that accounted for Supporter’s mishap, which certainly appeared to cost him the race. The Open Sprint.

The eleven starters in the Flying Handicap gave a little trouble at the post, and when the barrier went up they got away in rather straggling order, The Lamb just showing in front of Some Red, with Euphonium not far away. These three made all the running for four furlongs, when Euphon ium began to show a bit in front. Drawing out a little in the final run, Euphonium beat The Lamb by a length and a-half, while Pouma, who finished in great style, was only half a length away, followed by Ngata, at an interval of two lengths, and Avola. Pouma got a knock at the start and lost a

good many lengths, but was galloping Very fast at the finish. Euphopium looked a far better horse than when he raced at Wanganui. Ngata’s performance on his first appearance after a rather lengthy absence indicated that he has only to train on to win races. He was fourth or fifth all the way. A Comfortable Win. The Ladies’ Bracelet was not a particularly exciting race, Roche being in front all the way, and winning comfortably by a couple of lengths. Chyrria and Fire Brigade were in the places for nearly a mile, when Reranui ran into second place. Fire Brigade, however, finished the better and beat Reranui by a good two lengths for second place, while Chyrria finished next. Roaming provided a little diversion by giving an exhibition of buckjumping for a furlong or so, after which his rider discreetly dropped out of the saddle and led him back. Bonogne Repeats Form.

The day’s sport concluded wtih the Waihau ijack Handicap, which brought out nine starters. Bonogne, who was the medium of the biggest plunge of the day, repeated his Wanganui performance, being first out of the barrier and never letting the others in. Master Lucerne and Grand Lupin were nearest to the leader for the greater part of the journey, though Break o’ Day showed up turning for home, only to be displaced by Sunny Vale, who got to within a length and a-half of Bonogue and beat Master Lucerne by a similar margin. Break o’ Day was fourth.

MELBOURNE NOTES Received October 25, 5.5 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 24. Cecil Godby returned from England to-day. Heroic’s starting in the Melbourne Cup is doubtful. He may run in weight-for age races if his condition improves. G. Delaney’s appeal to the V.R.C. against his disqualification was dismissed to-day.

THE WELLINGTON MEETING BAD DAY FOB BACKERS. COMMENDATION WINS CLASSIC. HANDICAPS TO OUTSIDERS. * (Special to “Chronicle.”) WELLINGTON, Oct. 24. j It is a long time since punters at Trentham received such a sound thrashing as they got on the first day of the Wellington Spring meeting to-day. Outsiders rolled home with monotonous regularity, and in but ono race did a favourite score, and that one was to the average racegoer hardly worth back mg at the short price. Three other favourites ran second and one third, but the profit on the three dividends was only nine shillings. Altogether it was a bad day for backers. As showing the inability of the public to measure the fields races were won by two ninth favourites, one eighth favourite, three seventh favourites and one sixth. Including the very short price returned by the winner of the Wellesley Stakes, the dividends of the day’s winners totalled £B4 10s. Only one, however, went over £2O. The successes of outsiders were contributed to by the heavy state of the going, due to rain overnight and in the morning. The running of Captain Sarto in the Hurdles was under question and the case hag been adjourned. The Jumpers. Captain Sarto was la little better favourite for the Hurdles than Sir Fanciful, with Merry Singer also well supported. The favourite ran very badly and was out of the contest with seven furlongs still to go. Askari was always in the picture, and over the concluding stages of the journey he never looked like getting belaten. Merry Binger was never far from the front and Wench, although out of a place, was also responsible for a good race. Sir Fanciful fotind the track just a trifle too heavy, but ran a useful race, on which he should shortly improve. Eonmark was well black early, but put in a good finishing run. Thirteen Two-year-olds.

The field for the two-year-old handicap saw thirteen runners, of whom Vertigern and Polonaise, and Climax and Spodo were bracketed. The Riccartontrained Bachelor, a half-brother, by Absurd, to Pluto, cferried over £2OOO, and Kilmoyler and Decoy Bird carried most of the remaining support. There is no doubting the speed of the favourite, for, with Polonaise, he came into the straight with such a commanding lead that it seemed impossible for anything else to get up. In the last fifty yards he stopped to a walk, enabling Vertigern land Spode to get up in time to beat him on the post. Bachelor was in need of a race, but might have won had his rider kicked him right out from the time he had Polonaise beaten. He will be a good two-year-old. Vertigern, the gelding by Rossendale—Pansy, was also having his first race, land he shaped promisingly. Spode, a half-sister to those good gallopers Bon Ton and Eligible, had a race at Wanganui and is fairly well forward, which stood to her. Decoy Bird ran like a duffer in the bad going. •Of the others only Volpllane and Limonite showed any form. A False Price. Backers confidently looked upon Tiega in the Wainui Handicap to put them on terms again, Mandane, Rivalry and Beacon Light being the best backed of the others. Tiega was never further back thian third, but he went down in the last stride to Tresham, who, considering his recent form, was paying an entirely false price. Tresham won like the good horse which he undoubtedly is, but it was greatly due to - Reed’s riding that he got up. Tiega is shaping like a good three-year-old. Kaiti was the pacem'aker for the best part of the journey and was still in front at the half-distance. The backers of the Fordell-trained Mandane were soon out of interest, as she got left at the mark and ran round behind the field, Sir Piam and Stream also getting left. Kilccit ran a good race and was prominent all the way, finishing sixth. Beaumont, who has been in retirement for a while, ran well for six furlongs. Crossfire finished fourth from a long way back, being unable to go the pace in the early stages. Dubious did not shfepe like a New Zealand Cup horse, but he may not have found the »track to his liking. Outsider Beats Bisox.

Rimntaka Handicap. (Of 300 sovs.; seven furlongs)

Bisox went close to carrying £2OOO in the Rimutaka Handicap, and when she ran second her backers lost a good deal of their original investment. She made a good effort to win, being in front practically all the way, but over the last furlong had no chance with Killoch, who romped home to pay the third successive double figure dividend and the best one of the day. Star Stranger was never going like a winner, but he ran a fair race. Subjection ran well, and appears to be much, more reliable this season. Indian Sage appeared a little unlucky, especially when making his run in the straight. Kilmiss was a long way black with half a mile to go, and she finished up surprisingly close to the first two horses, considering the ground she had to make up. The Big Handicap.

Wellesley Stakes. (Of 1000 sovs.; five furlongs)

Gold Light, Tanadees, and Tarleton were the absentees from the principal handicap, lefeving thirteen runners. Rapine was entrusted with the most money, carrying over £l6OO, as against just under four figures on the second favourite, Te Monanui. Rapine ran a fair race only. The surprise of the race was the good showing made by Te Karti, who was having his first race since returning from Australia. He looked as if he needed a race, and this was the case, but he might have been second had interference not taken place between him, Kilfaire, and Shining Armour in the straight. Kilfaire ran a grefet race, but was ridden the right way to get beaten. In the finish he was left without a run, while he

badly interfered with Shining Armour and Te Kara. Merry Day made no race of it over the last two furlongs. Well back in the rear until half a mile from home, she commenced her well-known run from there, and left them standing.. The public gave her a distinctly hostile reception—an unusual happening to a winner at Trentham. Te Monanui ran a very good race and was always well up over the last mile. In finishing fourth he left the impression that he has a big ciard still unplayed. Shining Armour confirmed the idea that he is an improving horse. Ho finished strongly and did not get the best of runs. Merry Day is liable to rehandicap for the New Zealand Cup. As Anticipated. The classic for the youngsters saw only Countersign missing. It looked on public form odds on Commendation, end backers had no hesitation in accepting a price of less than three to one on. Commendation won all the way. and was not extended. Limited justified the support accorded him by being in the van of the bunch throughout, but Helen stayed just a little better to take second money from him. Lysander, Kiosk, and Alyson ran fair races, but Note stayed on better, perhaps due to his more seasoned condition. Kilperon was never dangerous, nor was the Southerner Real Glad. Mimetic’s Fine Gallop.

Ilka was favourite for the open sprint during most of the betting, but in the finish a , run set in on Inferno, and he took first place from her when the bell stopped by one ticket. Ilka began with her usual brilliancy and was in front till inside the distance, where she wtis collared, but she ran a great race. Mimetic was doing it well till he got to the top of the straight, where the ground had him in trouble, but Reed took him a little wider out, and in the finish he won going away. Fourth place went to Lucius, who ran a very good race all the way. Lady Fingers ran a remarkably good race, for she drew No. 1 and, failing to go with the leaders, had to cover more ground and she put in a good finish. Suggestion was also responsible for a fine effort, and should soon show a return to winning form. A Paralysing Run. The necessity for running the last race in divisions was removed by numerous scratchings. Coconut made a bold bid for victory, and was with the leaders throughout, but in the finish an outsider in Birthmark came to light with a paralysing run and scored easily. Standard hnd Polyphemus both ran good races and were possibilities throughout. The Investments. The totalisator put through £46,785 10s, an increase of £1450 10s on the total for the corresponding day last year.

TO-DAY’S PROSPECTS. (Special to “Chronicle.”) WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. On yesterday’s form the following horses look like running prominently on Monday:— t Hurdles.—Sir Fanciful and Merry Singer. Tararua Handicap.—Killoch and Indian Sage. Roseneath Handicap.—Joy King and Bachelor. Pearce Handicap.—Tresham and Kilceit. Champion Plate.—Runnymede and Te Kara. Nainai Handicap.—Lady Fingers, Ilka and Lucius. Ruahine Handicap.—Horomea and Bi sox.

RACING AT WAVERLEY TO DAY'S MEETING BIG FIELDS IN VIEW The Waverley Racing Club’s annual meeting to-day should draw a larger crowd than Saturday’s fixture did, and if the weather is as pleasant as it promises at the time of writing to be the day should be very enjoyable. The special trains from Wanganui and New Plymouth will probably be well patronised and motor cars should make a great show at the course. Th® fields will be larger than on Saturday, and it is possible that there will be divisions in three races, including the hurdle race.

One of the division races may be the opening event, the

MORTON MEMORIAL MAIDEN RACE. (Of 125 8ovs; six furlongs.)

BREWER HANDICAP. (Of 190 sovs; six furlongs.)

The event is run at weight for age, which may be an important factor. Demure was running on at the end of five furlongs on Saturday, and it will be interesting to see how Argue shapes over the longer course. Banjuke’s hurdle form suggests that he may not be out of place among the maidens. The field will be of more modest dimensions in the

HACK HURDLES. (Of 150 sovs; V/j miles.)

WAVERLEY CUP. (Of 800 sovs; I’4 miles.)

Euphonium, who goes up 61b for his win, to 8.1, must run well again, if started, while The Lamb and Pouma may go better than on Saturday. Gaillaidappearance will be awaited with interest..

It will be an unusual happening if divisions are necessary m the

The rise of 91b, to 20.12, indicates that the handicapper was not prepared to take a risk with All Wind. San Fera is not badly treated, and Taitaita and Strategy may be in the money again.

Another big field will contest the WILSON HACK WELTER. (Of 115 sovs; seven furlongs.)

FLYING HACK HANDICAP. (Of 125 sovs; .lx furious.).

Bonogne has gone up to 10.0 (51b increase), Vaward to 9.1 (61b) and Roche to 8.3 (31b). Sunny Vale looks most likely to trouble Saturday’s winners. There will be a high class field in the

JACKSON HACK HANDICAP. (Of 125 sovs; five furlongs.)

Euphonium, who has been raised 31b, should go well if reserved for the big race, but Income, The Banker ana Muraahi represent class, and the top weight should be hard to beat.

Several horses that claim double gagements are in the

Glongariff is a newcomer who is entitled to respect, while Master Lucerne. Sunny Vale and Grand Lupin read best of the others. Argue has been raised from 7.8 to 8.0. Another useful field will contest the MOUMAHAKI HACK HANDICAP. (Of 150 sovs; one mile.)

It is not an easy race, but FlUette, Troilus and Grand Lupin (if he starts) may be prominent. The racing will conclude with the

Bonogne is np from 9.13 to 10.6 and Sea Star from 8.0 to 8.5, but both are very fast over five furlongs, while Empire Camp and Puawhato should keep them busy.
