GIRL GUIDES

WANGANUI DISTRICT ASSOCIATION

The first meeting of the recentlyformed Wanganui local association of the Girl Guides was held early in this month, when there were present: Mesdames C. P. Brown (in the chair), J. S. Barton, G. Robertson, Cunningham, Creed Meredith, H. F. Christie, E. M. Silk, Misses Cruickshank, Newcombe, and Hutton and Archdeacon Creed Meredith and Air H. Christie.

An executive committee was formed, Mrs Hope Gibbons being elected local president, Mrs C. P. Brown, chairwoman, and Mrs E. M. Silk, secretary and treasurer. Miss Newcombe was nominated district commissioner and Miss D. Soeberg (captain of St. Peter’s company, Gonville) was appointed district captain. Intimation was received that various churches and schools wished to form companies, but the chief difficulty lay in finding and training suitable girls to act as leaders. With this end in view it was decided to hold a weekly training class at Miss Newcombe’s office, Ridgway Street, on Tuesday evenings, at 7 o'clock for girls .18 years of age and over, who are willing to be trained as future Guiders.. Numbers of younger girls are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to join the movement and be enrolled as Guides, but older girls are urgently needed to act as leaders in order that Guide companies may be formed in the different suburbs. Every help and encouragement will be given to those who volunteer, and they may rest assured that the work will prove full of incident and interest and something “just worth while.” St. Peter’s company, Gonville, is giving a demonstration of Guide activities this (Saturday) afternoon at the Putiki Mission School, where a new company is shortly to be formed. Bravo, Putiki!
