“BUY BRITISH”
PROTECTION OF PUBLIC. GOODS BRANDED WITH COUNTRY OF ORIGIN. GOVERNMENT URGED TO LEGISLATE. Received October 23, 7.25 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 22. The Federation of British Industries has written the President of the Board of Trade urging the vital necessity for the introduction of legislation to en force the marking of goods with the name of the country of origin. The Federation states: In view of Mine- isters’ support of the 41 Buy British” campaign, the subject has gained increased importance. There is ample evidence to show that the public desires to follow the advice, but difficulties arise owing to the sale of unmarked goods. Retailers, and even merchants’ expert buyers, are often innocently misled into the passing of foreign as British goods, while the law at present facilitates this being done deliberately by unscrupulous traders.
