WAVERLEY
WAR MEMORIAL TO BE UNVEILED NEXT. WEDNESDAY (From the “Chronicle's” Special Correspondent). The War Memorial Committee met on Wednesday evening to consider matters regarding the unveiling of the War Memorial. The secretary, Mr Fred Johnston, reported having received a telegram from the Hon. J. G. Coates stating that he would be passing. through Waverley on Wednesday, about noon, on his way to Wanganui, and if it could be fitted in he would be pleased to perform the unveiling ceremony. The secretary wired accepting the Prime Minister's offer. ■£ The notice is short, but as Mr Coates is a very busy man at present, it was thought well to accept the offer, 'otherwise it would mean waiting until after the election. It is hoped that the public will make a special effort to be present at the ceremony, especially all the returned soldiers, who are asked to parade in mufti and ribbons at the Town Board room at 10.45 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, and march from there to the memorial site.
The firing party will be supplied by the local troop of Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles under Lieuts. B. Harvey and C. B. Tilley.
