WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was held on Wednesday night, Mr W. Collins presiding. There were also present Messrs Fraser, Durward, Homingway, Birnie, H. Mclntyre, Aitken, Adams and Joblin. General Business. It was decided to fill in a well in the yard at the residence of the headteacher at Patea, at a cost of £2 10s. It was resolved to pay an account amounting to £7 4s 9d for repairs to the drains at the Durie Hill School. It was resolved to apply to the Department for grants to improve the outhouses at the Gonville and Aramoho schools. The architect was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of improvements necessary to the conveniences at Keith Street School. In regard to tho manual training department at the Marton District High School, the Education Department advised that a grant of £4l 5s had been made for covering the floor in the cookery room.—Received. It was agreed to install fountain drinking heads at Queen’s Park School. Architect’s Report. The architect reported as follows: Castlecliff.—Minor repairs to the windows have been carried out and a new gate fixed at the school ground entrance. Aramoho.—Work in connection with the erection of extensions to this school is now well advanced, and it is hoped to have the building ready for occupation by the middle of the coming month. Tawhero. —The levelling and filling of the new site have been somewhat delayed by the severe weather. ISjwever, it is hoped to have the site in readiness for the comencement of the building within the next week. Tenders have been called for the brick foundations. A contract has been let for the- joinery and the whole of the timber for both the main building and out-buildings has been ordered. Agricultural Instruction.

The chief instructor in agriculture presents the following report: —“Indoor work. —This is progressing quite satisfactorily, and, save in some few instances, the note books show steady improvement.

Outdoor work.—Very little has been done in the garden plots up to date on account of tho exceptionally wet season, but this month should see better conditions for the work, and sowing will occupy most of the time during the coming few weeks. Boys and Girls’ Clubs.—The following schools have signified their intention of entering for the competition, and though in the Wanganui area full entries arc not yet to hand, it is expected that the schools mentioned here will all be taking part:—Waituna, Clydesdale, Fitzherbert East, Kimbolton, Rangiwahia, Kakariki, Mount Biggs, Cheltenham, Aratika, Moutoa, Waitohi, Kairanga, Waiata, Makino, Ashurst, Glen Oroua, Awahuri, Colyton, Mount Richard’s Road, Pohangina, Newbury, Awahou North, Kiwitea, Oroua Downs, Halcombe, Te Arakura, Taomfi, Apiti, Valley Road, Carnarvon, Taikorea, Kelvin Grove, Rongotea, Manutahi, Kakaramea, Alton, Hurleyville, Whenuakura, Waitotara, Waverley, Maxwell, Westmere, Brunswick, Upoko ngaro, Bulls, Turakina, Wangaehu, Fordell, Kaitoke, Okoia, Nukumaru. From these it is expected there will be over 300 competitors, a decided advance on the numbers of previous years. Full detailed 'entries will be furnished when these are complete to hand.

Teachers’ Saturday classes.—These have now been completed for the year, a total of 42 hours’ instruction in general science and agriculture having been given. The work done by the trainees has been on tho whole very good. The thanks of the Board arc due to Mr Walton for the excellent manner in which he conducted his science class in Wanganui, and to the technical authorities who have placed their science equipment at our disposal. General. —Tree seeds, pines and eucalypts are to hand from the Forestry Department, and will be distributed to schools as they are required.
