26 MILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS WORTHLESS LAND IRRIGATED. CURSE OF PARTY POLITICS. Received Oct. 22 7.45 p.m. WASHINGTON, Oct. 21. The Department of the Interior announces that twenty-six million dollars of Federal funds were expended on the irrigation of worthless lands, six thousand unoccupied farms, and various Government reclamations projects. Politics forcing works to be built in different States was the main cause, also easy purchase terms, which resulted in much land being occupied by inexperienced settlers, while the absence of a credit agency handicapped others. Only one project met its obligations when due, whereas onethird of the (annual maintenance cost was unpaid. It. was expected to bo repaid by settlers. Two hundred million dollars wore spent to irrigate two million acres, supporting half a million people.
