N.Z. AMATEUR ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP

WON BY HERBERT. [Per Press Association.] GISBORNE, Oct. 22. The fifty mile amateur cycling road championship of New Zealand was decided to-day. The weather w*as overcast, with a head wind for the first 19 miles of the second lap. The first lap was over a course of about 12 miles, tho competitors returning to town, then setting out on the second lap, of about thirty-eight miles. There were five starters in the championship—C. Flett (Wellington), A. W. Day (Canterbury), J. Algie, F. Herbert and J. Douglas (Gisborne). In conjunction with the championship, la handicap race was run, with ten starters. After going six miles, Douglas punctured and fell out. On turning for the second lap, Day was in tho lead of the championship men, one length ahead of Flett, and followed by Algie and Herbert. The four men turned practically together at Te Karaka and remained in a bunch till a mile from home. Here Herbert and Flett drew out. Three hundred yards from the tape Herbert sprinted and secured a two lengths’ lead, which he retained till tho post was passed. Algie was twenty yards back third. Day was la similar distance fourth. Herbert’s time was 2hrs 35min. 9sec. Flett took 2hrs 35min 9 2-ssec and Algie 2hrs 35min 12sec.
