' WANGAIiIM AMATEUR CLUB

EVENING MEETING. The above club held the first of their series of evening meetings on Cook’s Gardens last evening. There was a good crowd of spectators, and the racing was first class, the finishes being very close. H. Newton ran a great race in the 1000 yards from scratch, being beaten by four yards in 2min. 25secs — r a great gallop for so early in the season. Results:— 100 Yards Handicap. First Heat.—H. Edmondson (9yds.) 1, C. Maitland (4yds.) 2, E. Spriggens (10 yds.) 3. Also started: A. Telfar (3), G. Broad (54), N. Bromley (7), J. Ruscoe (74), Rangi Ruahini (74). Won by inches, the rest of the field being close up. Time, 10 2-5. Second Heat.—W. Rusden (54yds.) 1, R. Hall (94yds.) 2, A. Heibner (4yds.) 3. Also started: P. Stiver (7), Cyru.si (74), F. E. S. Long (9), R. Tasker (10), J. Pawson (10), Mathew, (11). Won by half a yard, the rest of the field bunched a yard away. Time, 10 3-5. Final.—H. Edmondson 1, E. Spriggens 2, W..Rusden 3. Won by a yard. Long (60), V. E. Jones (60), R. Tasker (70). This was a great race. The limit men made the pace a cracker right from the start. The scratch man, Newton, went through his field like a champion . McLean, the winner, held the dead all the way, and, stalling off a challenge, won by four yards from Newton, Johnston a couple of yards away third and Steve Barry, who ran a great race, close up fourth. Time, 2.25. One Mile Cycle Handicap. C. Ericcson (10yds.) 1, H. Austin (50 yds.) 2, C. Smith (60yds.) 3. Also started: L. Moorchouse (30), W. Langsdown (60), E. Dear (60), L. Wakeley (90), Suisted (90), J. Stewart (90), G. Rollerson (90). The winner came through in the last lap, and -won by three lengths. Time, 2.21 1-5. Y.M.C.A.
