The annual general meeting of the Taihape Chamber of Commerce was hold on Monday evening, the President (Mr. R. A. Davies) presiding over a good attendance of members. Annual Report. The following report was also adopted:— Your Chamber has been in existence for a considerable number of years. During that time it has on various occasions ceased operations, but has now been active for a continuous period of six years. During the year now under review your council has held ten meetings. Many matters have been dealt with with varying success, but in the main members may feel that good results have been achieved. The metal on the main north road ends at about four miles beyond Hihitahi and does not commence again until Waiouru is reached. The unmetalled portion is almost impassable during a wet winter. Your council is endeavouring to approach the Rangitikei and Waimarino County Councils and also the Minister to have this portion metalled. The co-operation of the Ohakune Chamber of Commerce is being sought as it is considered that much benefit would result from the completion of the work. Your Council was successful in having the mid-day train from the South speeded up. It now arrives at 12 noon instead of at 12.40 as previously, thus allowing visitors from down the line an appreciably longer period for business purposes.

Success has also attended your council’s efforts in the direction of (1) minimising the nuisance caused by smoke from engines standing in the station yard; (2) speeding up the arrival and delivery of parcels from Auckland; (3) the provision of a suitable motor loading bank at the railway station; (4) the installation by the Domain Board of brick fireplaces on the Domain; (5) the exhibition by the same body in suitable localities of photographs of some of the innumerable beauty spots to be found in our extensive reserves; (6) improvement at some of the dangerous corners on the district roads and at various approaches to bridges; (7) the payment by the Wanganui Hospital Board of exchange on cheques payable to local tradespeople; (8) the provision of facilities at the local station yard for loading wool before 8 a.m. and after 9 p.m.

The Chamber is ever anxious and willing to champion the cause of any movement in the interests of the town and district. It is hoped that members who have suggestions to offer will not hesitate to bring them forward. The thanks of the Chamber are due to His Worship the Mayor for the use of his room for meetings; to the honorary auditor, Mr. A. M. Ryan, aryl finally to the Press for the cordial afid sympathetic assistance it has always given to the work in hand. In conclusion, your council expresses a hope that th© coining year may be

one of successful endeavour on the part of the Chamber and that to the business community it may mean more prosperous and stable conditions than those which obtained during the past few months. Election of Officers. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mr. R. A. Davies; vice-presidents, Messrs F. Read and E. Loader; council, Messrs J. G. Oldham, A. W. Beale, w’ H. Maclean, H. Bradley, H. Dashwood, H. L. Butler, D. Neagle, C. G. Ross. H. McCallum, J. Williams, A. It. Fanning F. Ward; auditor, Mr. A. M. Ryan. ’ General.—The matter of (1) setting up a retailers’ committee to act in lieu of a retailers’ association; (2) dealing with tho smoke nuisance, and (3) dealing with the parking of cars, were discussed and referred to the incoming Council for favourable consideration. THE RECREATION GROUND. Interesting Report. At tho meeting of the Borough Council on Friday evening the Oval Domain Committee recommended as follows: 1. That the Tennis Club be again written to urging them to proceed with the erection of the wire-netting on the Bowling Club’s fence. 2. That when the Council receives a satisfactory reply from the Tennis Club regarding fencing, etc., the matter of their application for the use of the grandstand for dressing-rooms be favourably considered. 3. That No. 2 football ground be closed for play during the second week in September in each year. 5. That a letter of thanks be written to the Rugby Union for donation of gate takings on October 3 towards the erection of gates to the Domain. 6. That the matter of converting the hors<*roller into two hand rollers be left with the engineer to attend to. i . That the chairman be instructed to interview Mr. Morgan regarding the making of cricket pitches. 8. That the engineer be authorised to obtain designs of ornamental gates for the Domain. 9. That the town clerk be authorised to make inquiries regarding advertisements on Oval Domain fence. RANGITIKEI SEAT MR LYON AT TAIHAPE Mr Alfred Lyon (National candidate for the Rangitikei seat) delivered his second address at this end of the electorate on Tuesday evening, when he spoke to a fairly large audience in the Taihape Town Hall. The Mayor (Mr A. J. Joblin) presided, and briefly introduced the candidate, who spoke along lines previously reported in the “Chronicle.” Mr Lyon criticised the Government for having broken its promise in regard to an elective Legislative Council, and electoral reform, and appealed to the electors to ignore the promises being made by the Government candidat.s in the present fight. He condemned Mr Coates for putting on an early election, stating that the time given for electioneering was too short for candidates who did not know their electorates, and thus gave sitting members an unfair advantage. He then went on to refer to “the huge extravagances and mighty losses” for which the Government was responsible. He dealt at some length with financial matters, and emphasised the necessity for a new administration. “Shoot them out; smite them heavy, smite them hard,” he said, to the amusement of his hearers. Mr Lyon criticised the Government’s immigration policy, and referred to the high prices paid for land for soldiers. He read from the Reform Party’s manifesto, and greatly amused his hearers with his words of condemnation. He concluded by reading the Nationalists’ policy, outlining in interesting fashion some of the main features. On tho motion of the chairman, Mr Lyon was accorded a vote of thanks.
