THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS I ~ I I (By “Early Bird.”) i Gisborne concludes to-morrow. South Canterbury Hunt also on to-morrow. I ! Pakuranga Hunt Club nominations are duo this afternoon at 5 o'clock. ! | Garzon was a big odds-on favourite | i when he won the hurdles at Gisborne • j Sunlike was backed to win the Maiden j yesterday, and his supporters duly col-I ; The winner of the open sprint. Nancy l I Lee, is a pretty smart sort, and judging 1 irom the price returned the win was , well anticipated. Barrier, the second ! horse, paid nearly as much as the win- ! [ ner. Thiganthu came to light again by 'landing lhe Gisborne Steeplechase from i Maraetotara. It is some time since Thiganthu was seen out. but a. couple of seasons ago In* gave promise of being something above the ordinary. Since racing at the last Ashhurst meeting Kenyon has performed fairly consistently, but more recently he was tried over hurdles, only to prove an i utter failure. He has now gone back ; ,lo fiat racing, and yesterday he scored , lin the Hack Elat, returning a great! ' price—nearly thirty of the best. : Al Napier and Hastings last month Silin raced fairly well and was a bi! i 1 unlucky. Yesterday the chance came' j his way. and he had no great difficulty j 1 in defeating the four others opposed to ! him in the Tramway Hack Steeples. I H. W. Johnson left here on .Monday with Santiago for Riccarton, ami ar 'rived safely yesterday. Santiago is in : good nick, but he will have to come on ! a lot. in lhe next two or three, weeks to I perform as well as he did last year at | Riccarton. | The Greenwood cast-off. Valdamo, is an adept at jumping hurdles. He goes at his fences boldly, and gives every ' indication of being a crackajack over 1 t hi* si inks. Dundalk, the winner of the recent Y.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase, is trained by the cx-Ncw Zealander, Stan. Reid. Rehutai has come into favour for the Winter Cup since the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. The Lucullus filly will be riden at Riccarton by L. G. Morris. Llewellyn is eligible for the Pakuranga. Hunt Cup and he is likely to go out favourite, for that race, no matter what the handicapper sets him to carry. Maurice McCarten’s disqualification expires two days before the Grand National meeting opens. A well-known owner has cabled to him offering him the riding of one of the well-fancied candidates for the Winter Cup. Old Surveyor is in great condit ion at present, and from appearances it looks las if the old fellow would not take long |io get into racing trim again. He was ’mated with about twenty mares last season, and all are in foal. It is stated that his list is fairly full for the com ing season. Solferino is at the head of the winning sires’ list in New Zealand this season. Sixty-four of his progeny won money, totalling over £28,000, with Count Cavour, Listening Post. Limelight. Geranial, and Mantua his biggest cont ributors. Gold Light is said to be working all right in Hawke’s Bay. and she is due to make her appearance early next season. The programme will be much the same as last year, provided she trains on all right, and she will be given her first run in the Avondale Cup, which she won last September. The New Mexico Stakes, a w.f.a. race with penalties and allowances and re- ( strieted to two-and-thrce-year-olds. , caught on with Sydney owners. It will I be run at the Elect meeting at Randwick to-morrow ami there are 51 on- | tries. Windbag is of the number, as (are Boaster, and Red Gauntlet. Wind- , bag will carry 141 b penalty, and, with J the distance only six furlongs, (1.12 should keep him from the front. I Writing in Sporting Life about Pha- | laris, sire of the English Derby winner : Manna. Mr W. Allison (the special commissioner) mentions that a New South I Wales breeder had first option over the stallion had he been for sale. “Lord i Derby himself,’’ writes .Mr Allison, “was the first to realise the value of ! Phalaris as a stallion to mate with staying blood. He came to the conclusion I that his mares were tending too much I in the direction of stamina, excluding speed. At that time I tried to buy I Phalaris for Air Reginald White, of N.S.W.. and he went and saw Lord Derby about it. The result was that Mr White should have lhe refusal of the horse if he were for sale at all. but no hope was held out that business could be done. Lord Derby wrote expressing that this was just the horse he wanted to put speed into his staying mares, and he was absolutely right. He is in the pleasant position of having his two stallions. Phalaris and Swynford. at the head of the list, ami practically certain to remain so to the end ! of Ihe season.’ ’ I WAIMATE HUNT MEETING h xi l.i; 808 WINS STEEPLECHASE (Per Press Association.)
