BURGLARS’ GREAT HAUL
HISTORIC PALACE LOOTED BOOTY WORTH £1,500,000 Received June 30, 9.5 p.m. LONDON, June 30. The Daily Chronicle’s Paris correspondent says: Messages from Lisbon state that the famous palace, Villa Vicosa, the summer residence of the King of Portugal, and which belongs to ex-King Manoel, has been ransacked by burglars, who took booty estimated to be worth £1,500,000, including a massive silver dinner service, priceless tapestries, ancient gold vases, and pictures by old masters. The late King Carlos was staying here when he signed the decree deporting the leaders of the Portuguese Republicans. Dropping his pen he said: “I fe®l just as if I had signed sentence of my death.” Two days later the King and his eldest son were murdered in Lisbon.
