The Farmers’ Co-op. Organisation Society of N.Z. Ltd., report: —Contrary to anticipation, the dairy sales have been particularly bright, good cows fetching high money. In fact the competition at most sales has been keener although prices are hardly as high as those ruling last year. Some very good averages have been obtained especially for herds of quality Jerseys, individual cows making up as high as £2l 10s. The demand can be accounted for by the fact that the culling right throughout the district has been exceptionally heavy this season and replacements are necessary. It is most noticeable that the poor quality cow is net asked for and we are glad that the farmer now realises that it is not a paying proposition to milk the inferior sorts. So far little attention has been paid to in-calf heifers, but at clearing sales good Jerseys have met with reedy sale. During the week we have conducted sales on behalf of Messrs Cassidy and Hill, Kapunui, Watson’s Estate, Eltham, J. S. McKenzie, Te Kiri, F. Milham, Whakamara, A. Jackson, Normanby, J. Francis, Oeo; T. A. Bridge, Kapunui; Jas. Hodge, Mata, John Humphries, Opunake; Harris & Minhinnick, Hawera, when a total of 602 cows have come under the hammer. Also horses and implements. Quotations: — First-class Jersey young dairy cows, early calvers up to £l5, exceptional to £2l 10s, medium to good, £lO to £11; others £3 to £8; 2-year Jersey in-calf heifers, good £lO, others £6 to £8; weaners, ordinary 15/- to 25/-; good young farm mares and geldings, £3O to £3B; waggons £4O to £55; implements full market values. The sheep market has been fairly good, the enquiry for hoggets and weaner ewes being well up to the supply. The yarding has not been particularly heavy, but anything coming forward has met with ready sale. Medium late shorn ewe hoggets 23/9; early shorn mixed sex hoggets 25/-; smaller early shorn mixed sex hoggets 20/- to 21/9; mixed aged Lincoln skinned ewes in lamb to Romney rams, 27/9; Romney skinned ewes in lamb, 30/-; twotooth Wethers 29/9; fattening ewes 20/to 21/6. Fat sheep.—The market is fairly

bare. Wethers 35/-, ewes 26/- to 28/6. Fat cattle.—The market is easier, but vendors are holding on in the h pcs of an improvement, and it is only in the yards that the fat cow can be bought at the reduced prices. Store cattle.—The market is very quiet.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., Palmerston North, report: —At our Rongotca sale on Wednesday we had a small yarding. Owing to the unfavourable weather the attendance was small and bidding was in favour of purchasers.
